Thursday, during lunch period, Lena and Mia sit at a round table with their usual salads. Their senior year is coming to an end and they want to spend as much time together as possible before heading to college. Maybe at college, Lena can restart her life. A new life where a buried body or a psycho boyfriend isn't involved.
"And Edward?" Mia asks, taking the lid off her salad bowl.
Lena releases a short chuckle, rolling her eyes. "He isn't into me, Mia. If he was, he would've be right here," she says, patting the leftover seat on her right.
"Why are the hottest boys the most stupid ones?" Mia asks, grunting.
"Look at us," Lena murmurs, grinning. "I bring my hopes up into having a new relationship and you have a crush on a gay guy."
Mia widens her eyes and almost chokes in a tomato. "I don't like Wyatt anymore."
"And why is that?" Lena says, grabbing her water bottle and taking a small sip.
"I accepted the fact that he's gay," Mia answers. "I still think he's cute, though."
Lena laughs, checking the fact that love just isn't her thing anymore. "We suck at love, don't we?"
Mia nods slowly. "Apparently."
"Let's forget our shitty love life and focus on prom!" Lena changes the depressing topic, as if prom will be her best night when XOXO is included.
"Can't wait to brag my dress!" Mia squeals, squeezing the sides of the table.
"Right. Mine is—"
"Lena?" Edward interrupts her.
Lena makes a long eye contact with Mia before turning around. "Yeah?"
Edward bites his pouty lip and says, "Please let me go to prom with you."
Lena cocks her head. "You are going with me, dummy."
"But the note—"
"What note?" Lena quickly asks.
"Are you playing the same trick on me, like last time when you couldn't remember about Andrew asking out Tony to prom?" Edward wraps both arms around his chest.
"I never sent you a note!" Lena insists.
Edward grunts, getting annoyed.
"What did it say?" Lena asks again.
"'I'm sorry. I can't go to prom with you,'" Edward quotes.
"That's it?" Lena closes her eyes.
Edward nods.
"It wasn't me, Edward," Lena repeats. "Someone tried to ruin our prom night."
"Oh, my god!" Mia chirps, nose flaring. "It has to be the sophomore girl that is obsessed with you."
"Oh," Edward simply murmurs. "I forgot about her."
Lena is the only one that disagrees with the two of them. It has to be XOXO. Game on. Maybe that's its way of saying that the pathetic game has started. Or does Rowan want Lena back and that's why he sent that note to Edward? It makes sense.
Unless it's the girl that craves for Edward. She might want him for herself, making Lena's life a living nightmare. But why involve Tony and Michelle?
Annoying, sophomore girl? Off the list.
"We are still going," Lena re-confirms with Edward. "Together."
Edward grins from ear to ear, pulling the chair next to her and sitting down. "So, what do you think is going to happen on Saturday?"
Wise choice of words.
An unknown individual who names itself XOXO might slit my throat, or who knows, maybe yours too, she wants to say. But instead she replies: "We are going to have fun all night."
He must've taken it the wrong way because his grin transforms into a sexual smirk.
Boys.
"And you, Mia? Who are you taking to prom?" Edward says, snapping back to reality and facing Mia.
Mia smiles, answering, "Wyatt."
Edward tilts his head sideways. "The soccer player?"
"You don't even talk to him anymore," Lena adds, taking a bite from her salad.
"We text quite a lot." Mia sits straighter, glancing at Wyatt throwing a fry at a dark-headed guy. "And we do have conversations. It's just that you've been hanging a lot with your other friends these past days."
"Michelle and Tony?" Lena calls.
Mia nods, pouting her lips.
Lena grins, enjoying her jealousy. "Aw! You do care for me."
Mia closes her eyes, covering her face with both hands in order to hide her smile.
"Don't worry," Lena affirms. " They are simply just friends. You are my best friend."
Just as Mia is about to grab Lena's hand, Tony and Michelle tap her shoulder.
"What's up, guys?" Lena asks, ignoring Mia's stretching hand.
Slowly, she retreats her hand, begging that no one saw that rejection. A needle sinks in her heart as Lena focuses her full attention at her other friends.
Edward gives Tony a "manly" handshake, as if trying to let him know he's straight.
"There's been another note," Michelle quickly blurts out.
Tony bumps her shoulder.
Edward faces them, knitting both eyebrows. "Note?"
Lena looks at Michelle with wide-eyes and then at Edward. "College application."
Edward nods, starting a conversation with Mia so the two won't feel left out.
Lena stands up, her heart slamming into her rib cage as she walks outside with Michelle and Tony. What else does he want? Can't XOXO drop it once and for all!
"Next time, send me a text," Lena warns, walking into a gap between the gym and the school building.
"Are you stupid?" Tony blurts out. "Anyone can find out if they grab your phone. Better not risk it."
"Let me read it," Lena says once she's a hundred-percent sure no one can be eavesdropping.
Michelle unzips her backpack, sliding a black note to Lena while making sure they're actually alone.
Lena opens it and reads.
ᴘʀᴏᴍ ɪs ɴᴇᴀʀ, ᴀɴᴅ sᴏ ᴀᴍ ɪ.
—xᴏxᴏLena chews the inside of her cheek, stopping only when the metallic taste fills her mouth. XOXO can't help but love teasing them.
"See the good side," Tony utters.
The two girls look up at him.
"At least we were right about prom night," Tony answers, shrugging. "XOXO is going to be there."
Lena and Michelle look at each other, rolling their eyes at the same time and slapping their faces mentally.
