Wednesday, at school, the only conversation going around is about prom. Only three days away and Lena can't seem to worry about it. Literally, everyone has been bragging about their prom dates and how their dresses are perfect that they can't wait to wear them. But Lena has a simple question that has been bothering her for weeks already: Who was with them the night they buried Karen's body?
Even though Lena hasn't been getting notes anymore, she still knows someone is spying on her. Is Rowan XOXO? When she was at the mall with Mia, she can swear it was him wearing the black hoodie. Half of his face was covered, but the green eyes and sharp facial structure gave it away. If only she could catch a glimpse of him again, just to make sure he is out of jail.
Somehow, Lena also feels different—entirely not her. She's been blaming the fact that she is part of a murder now, but is it? Forgetting important memories and suddenly waking up with dirt on her hands isn't something she would do. According to her, the way Rowan threw her down the stairs and slammed her head into the ground several times must've affected a part in her brain.
Out of nowhere, interrupting her thoughts, a grip wraps in her shoulder and pulls her into the custodians room. Lena is about to yell for help, but the person covers her mouth.
"Shush! Lena, it's me," Michelle whispers, letting go off Lena.
"You scared me, dumbass!" Lena squeaks, shaking her head.
Michelle actually smiles, as if she not exhausted from all the sleepless nights ever since she got the last XOXO note. "I'm sorry."
Lena's eyes get wide as she notices Michelle from closer. "Those purple bags underneath your eyes, girl! What's happening?"
Michelle looks at the orange ceiling. "As if you don't really know."
Lena scoffs. "XOXO?"
Michelle nods, touching her lazy bun that has small hairs sticking out from everywhere. This isn't the normal Michelle. She used to be the well-dressed and nice-done hair girl that would always get straight As no matter what. Recently, even her grades have dropped.
"So, what did he— she, or whoever it is, say this time?" Lena asks, checking if the door is locked, and it is.
Michelle looks around her, as if the only things surrounding them aren't dirty mops and disinfectant sprays. "We made a huge mistake, Lena."
Lena can hear Michelle's voice cracking as she speaks. "What do you mean?"
Michelle leans closer to Lena, their noses almost touching. "XOXO mentioned that investigators are already searching in the Hush Hush woods."
She takes a deep breath before continuing. "We... we didn't wear gloves when we got rid of K— her."
Lena senses the floor turning into JELL-O as she rests a hand on the wall to balance herself. Her vision turns dark for a while before Michelle shakes her up.
"You get me, don't you?" Michelle stammers.
Lena snaps back to reality. "Our fingerprints are all over Karen's body."
Michelle nods slowly.
"If they find her body..." Lena can't seem to bring out words out of her mouth.
"—we'll go to jail," Michelle finishes for her.
Lena stares at the white tiles under her feet. The world she used to be in turning a completely opposite turn. Her futures plans were graduating out of high school, earning a major in cosmetology, finding the perfect husband, and having two kids.
Going to jail was never one of them.
Lena looks up at Michelle, determined. "We have to dig up the body and get rid of it completely."
"Exactly what I was thinking," Michelle agrees, biting her lips.
"We have to do it fast," Lena warns. "Before the others find it." And by others, she means the cops and search group.
The bell can be heard inside the custodian room.
Before opening the door and walking to their classes, Michelle says, "I'll tell Tony." They nod at each other and head opposite ways.
