Hayley’s POV

Hayley was almost quivering with anticipation, as Mr Campbells stood at the microphone. She was desperately hoping that she was in Kat’s class, and she hoped they got into Mrs Watergrass’ homeroom together. Hayley felt a sharp pain in her ribcage, and turned to see Holly glaring at her. “Stop quivering, you’re shaking the whole seat!” Holly hissed at her.

“I can’t help it!” Hayley responded, grinning, I’m really excited!” Hayley resisted the urge to laugh, as Holly rolled her eyes, and turned her attention back to Mr Campbells.

“Welcome year 7’s!” He began, his deep voice echoing through the chapel. “It is wonderful to see so many fresh faces, and I hope that most of you who were with us last year have come back.” Hayley saw Kat roll her eyes, and had to smother a giggle that rose up in her throat.

Mr Campbells went on to talk about school rules, upholding the school values, and a million other things that Hayley really couldn’t be bothered listening to. She turned to her right, and saw Holly discreetly playing flappy bird on her iPod. She leaned over, and snatched it from her grasp. Holly glared at her, but Hayley opened notes, and wrote, ‘If I have to go through this torture, then you can as well!’ Holly sighed, and returned her focus to the ever-talking Mr Campbells.

When he was done putting students to sleep, Mr Campbells finally announced, “Now, here are the homeroom teachers of year 7!” All the students applauded, eager to find out whose class they were going to be in. One by one, the teachers stepped up, and read out their class. As the number of children in the chapel shrank, the four girls gripped each other’s hands, desperately hoping that they would be in the same class. There were two teachers left, Ms Gambiol, and Ms Watergrass. Ms Gambiol got up, and started to read out the names of the people in her class. Things were going well, until suddenly Holly’s name was called out. Hayley watched in dismay as she stood up, and then, a little while later, Maisy’s name was called as well. Ms Gambiol continued reading out names, and neither Hayley nor Kat was called. The girls stared at each other in horror, and then Hayley stood up and gave Maisy and Holly a hug. Kat followed her lead, and then they sat back down as the two girls walked away with their new class.

Ms Watergrass stood up, and smiled at the remaining students. “Well,” she started, “I guess you guys are coming with me!”

oOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo

Hayley and Kat walked with another girl as they were led to Ms Watergrass’ classroom. The girl introduced herself. “Hi, I’m Ashlee,” she told them, “But you can call me Azie, everyone does.” Hayley and Kat introduced themselves, and the girls quickly struck up conversation.

Hayley was walking along, listening to Kat and Azie talk about something they had in common (annoying brothers) when suddenly she stumbled into someone. The person turned around crossly, “Watch where you’re going plea……”

Suddenly, their voice trailed off. Hayley found herself staring into the blue eyes of a boy. He had long blonde hair, that hung over his forehead, and he was about the same size as her. He was staring at her with wide eyes, and looked like he was struggling to remember what he had been about to say. He finally recovered, “H-h-hi” he stammered. Hayley smiled at him,

“Hi, I’m Hayley, who exactly are you?” The boy managed a small smile,

“I’m Jack Thomson.” He held out his hand, and she shook it.

“Nice to meet you” Hayley said, “Sorry for bumping into you.” She blushed slightly. Jack ran his hand through his hair, and smiled nervously,

“That’s ok, I probably shouldn’t have stopped right in the middle of a moving crowd like that!” He told her sheepishly. Hayley laughed, then realised that the rest of the class was walking away.

“We’d better hurry, or we’ll be late for our very first class.” She warned him. Jack grinned, and they walked after their class together. They caught up to everyone, and Hayley walked quickly to catch up to Azie and Kat. They gave her quizzical looks, but didn’t say anything.

They reached the classroom, and Ms Watergrass told them all to choose their seats. Hayley, Kat and Azie quickly grabbed three seats in a row, and sat down. Hayley noted with a strange prickle of happiness, that Jack sat on her other side. Kat raised her eyebrows at her when she noticed this, but once again, made no comment.

Ms Watergrass rubbed her hands together gleefully. “Well class, welcome to 7B!”
