Maisy’s POV
Maisy walked with her new class, with her stomach churning. She had gone through a series of emotions today, and it wasn’t quite agreeing with her toast. First, she had been excited to find out whose class she was in, then she had been nervous, when the teachers had started calling out names. After that, she had been scared, when Holly’s name got called out, and then relieved when her name got called to. Then came disappointment, when she realised that Kat and Hayley weren’t in their class. Now, she was back to excitement, because she was in Ms Gambiol’s class with Holly. They had both had her in year 5, and they still considered her an amazing teacher.
Holly gave her a nudge, “Why the long face?” She sounded concerned. Maisy sighed,
“I guess I just thought that we might all get to be in the same class.” Maisy admitted. Holly grinned at her,
“We can still see them during recess and lunch, you do realise?” Holly told her, putting her arm around her shoulder. Maisy smiled at her, before replying,
“And between classes!” Holly gave her a high five,
“That’s the spirit!” The girls laughed. Suddenly, someone barged between them. Holly’s eyes glinted with anger, and Maisy pitied the person that had just lit her temper fuse. Maisy watched as Holly sprinted after the person, catching up to them quickly, before reaching out, and grabbing their jumper. She pulled them to a halt, then spun them around. Looking back at her, was a boy.
He had tousled, curly brown hair, and sparkling mischievous eyes, which were a deep, dark brown. He was a bit taller than Holly, but only a bit. This enabled Holly to almost look him in the eye, and she could be pretty intimidating when she wanted to.
Maisy watched, knowing that things might get nasty soon, and she wanted to be around in case she had to break something up.
The boy glared at Holly, his eyes darkening. “What do you think you’re doing exactly?” He asked her, his tone threatening. Holly didn’t look phased though, in fact, it seemed to anger her more.
“I came to make you apologise for charging between me and my friend like that!” The boy looked bored, and rolled his eyes, before responding
“I don’t feel the need to apologise. I was looking straight ahead at the path I was going to take. You two just happened to get in my way.” Maisy saw the edges of Holly’s lips twitch, into a half-smile. Maisy was pretty sure she knew why. It sounded exactly like the sort of comeback Holly herself would come up with. Maisy returned her attention to Holly, who was now glaring defiantly at the boy again.
“I still haven’t heard a sorry” she told him, her tone suggesting that arguing would not be good for his health. The boy didn’t seem to hear the threat she was implying, for he simply shrugged.
“Well, you’re not going to be hearing one anytime soon, so, I wouldn’t hold my breath if I was you!” He then turned around, and started walking away. Maisy was pretty sure her mouth was hanging open in utter astonishment. Nobody ever talked to Holly like that, for fear of receiving one of her world famous slaps. It was rumoured that whenever she slapped someone, the sound echoed through the whole school, warning people not to push her buttons. Maisy was about to walk up to her friend, when suddenly the boy turned around, and smiled at Holly. “By the way, I never caught your name.” Holly stood there for a second, before replying,
“The names Bennet, Holly Bennet.” The boy chuckled at the James Bond reference, and held out his hand.
“Mines Nate Léger.” Holly stood there for a second, stuck in another moment of indecision obviously, before shaking his hand.
“Nice to meet you, I suppose” she responded. Then, abruptly, she turned around, and walked back to a very astonished Maisy.
Maisy stood there, trying to process what she had just seen. Holly had just been insulted (kind of) by a guy, and she hadn’t hit him so hard that his teeth vibrated in his head? Strange, just plain strange. Maisy shrugged, and told herself that Holly had probably just been shocked at the fact that someone would be so outright rude to her. To be truthful, Maisy was pretty sure it had shocked anyone who had seen the conversation! Maisy shook her head. Just get through the day without your head exploding, she told herself, just make that your goal.
