Nate could not believe how stupid he was. He was getting a crush on his best friend.

He was pretty sure it had started that day when she had taken him for a ride on Cherri. He had felt like he was finally seeing her, like she was opening herself up to him. Then, when Lili had started flirting with him, he had been able to see a murderous look on her face, which thankfully had been directed at Lili, not him. It had given him a strange feeling (it had almost felt like he had taken a mouthful of soft drink, then burped, and the bubbles had rushed up his nose), it had felt weird, but surprisingly pleasant.

The worst thing? He was realizing all this as he was sitting behind her in a canoe.

It was their second activity of the day and Nate was thankful that it was a water sport. So far the coolest the weather had been was around 25 degrees. Holly was wearing a yellow, pink and white t-shirt that had a unicorn on it. It said, ‘Keep it unreal.’ He had to laugh, that was so something Holly would own. She also had on shorts that, although they weren’t quite short-shorts, were still a bit shorter than normal. When the day had first started, she had walked up to him, grumbling and pulling at the bottom of the shorts. “Mum took out my long shorts and put these in!” She had complained angrily, whilst behind her Maisy chortled with amusement. Nate had laughed, but he didn’t find it so amusing now because he had to use all his self-control not to stare at her legs like a pervert.

He was jolted back to the present by Holly splashing water onto his face. “Hello? Ground control to Major Tom? Is Nate there?” Her voice was light and teasing and the sunlight was glinting off her hair, turning the tiny bits of blond she had to gold. Nate dragged himself away from his thoughts, promising them that he would return later to sort out his confused mind.

“Major Tom to Ground Control, what is your status report?” He joked, smiling up at Holly. She laughed and he felt a part of his heart go ker-bump. Cut it out, Nate mentally warned his heart, start thinking of Holly as a friend, ok? It obviously paid no heed to his warning, as it continued playing hopscotch in his chest. He sighed and promised himself to talk to Kat when they went back to school. Kat was a reliable person that he trusted to keep his secrets. She was the first person (and probably the only) that he was going to tell about Holly. He knew that Jack, Sky and Brad would be super angry at him if he didn’t tell them, but he was reluctant to share this with them just yet.

A thought suddenly struck him and he grinned. All the students had been told that they were not allowed to bring electronics with them to camp, but being the rebel he was, Nate had brought his phone. I’ll talk to Kat during lunch, he promised himself. He had told Kat that he was taking his phone and that he would update her on everything that went on at lunchtime.

After managing to survive the rest of the canoe activity without falling into the lake head-first (he did manage to fall in back-first, knee-first, foot-first and face-first. Is that the same as head-first?) Nate helped drag the canoes back onto the shore. He then ran towards the cabins, calling out to a surprised looking Holly that he would see her at lunch. He launched himself into his room and quickly shut the blinds in case any teachers were wandering around. He pulled his phone out of its hiding place (a pair of his socks that was at the bottom of his bag) and sent a quick message to Kat.

Nate: Hey, Kat, you there? I need to talk to you about something.

Kat: NATE! My man! How are things? What do you need to talk to me about?

Nate: Things are complicated. I need to talk to you about Holly.

Kat: WHAT HAPPENED! DID SOMEONE HURT HER? TELL ME WHO IT WAS! TELL ME!

Nate: Whoa, calm down. No one hurt Holly, ok? It’s just…. Ummm…

Nate sighed, looking down at the screen. This was a lot harder than he had thought it would be. He quickly finished typing the text and hit send before he could chicken out.

Nate: Whoa, calm down. No one hurt Holly, ok? It’s just…. Ummm… I think I might like her.

Kat: ……

Nate: Kat?

Kat: …….

Nate: What is it?

Kat: I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT I KNEW IT I KNEW IT!

Nate: What? How?!

Kat: Well, it was kind of obvious. I mean, I am literally the most romantically oblivious person that I know and even I could tell!

Nate: Gee, thanks. That makes me feel so much better. Seriously though, how will I be able to tell if she likes me back?

Kat: That’s obvious! Although, it might be easier to tell you in person. I will wait until you get back to school.

Nate: Ok, thanks Kat. By the way, how are things going at school?

Kat: One word for you. Homework. And lots of it.

Nate sent a goodbye before turning off his phone and stashing it back into his socks. He lay down on his bed and sighed. Why did life have to be so, freaking, complicated?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just saying, who loves Kat? She is seriously awesome.

Who wants Nate and Holly to get together? Who wants them to crash and burn?! (I'm evil)

Hope that everyone is enjoying the story so far. Next chapter is a bit dramatic and sad, but hopefully it's still good! Thank you all for getting me so many reads, I was so excited when I saw how many I have.
