Chapter Ten ~ Rescue

I walked down the corridors again. I had stopped crying slightly, but I was still upset. The look on Tao's face broke me, and his words echoed in my mind. He can't let me go! I had no idea he loves me that much! I thought, walking towards the bridge.

I looked down at my shoulder, it looked the same. Except that it didn't look as raw anymore. It just looked like a wound. I sighed. Did Toby and Michael suffer the same fate? Did Kris, Dex, and Lydia? If they hadn't, then where were they? Why weren't they coming back?

I came to the bridge. I sat down on it, I still felt the same. I still looked the same. I didn't seem to be changing at all! I pulled my knees up and wrapped my arms around them and started to cry.

I was scared, so scared! And I wanted Toby, or Tao, or even Kris! I leaned against a post and cried. What else could I do?

Tao just sat there, feeling hopeless. Mindy was poring through the book, trying to find a way to help Rae. But what could they do? How could they help? By the time they got to her she would probably already be changed.

Tao shuddered at the thought, so he dismissed it. He wished that she was still with him, he wished that she had never insisted on going out alone to look for Toby and Michael. Stupid girl! He thought, fighting back tears. My stupid girl! My beautiful, amazing, gorgeous, stupid, stubborn girl! It was then that he realized there was something in his hand. He looked down and saw a photo of the two of them together. The one they had taken when they went skiing together.

Rae had suggested that they take a first couple photo with her Polaroid camera. Tao had agreed. Just before they took the picture, Tao kissed her on the cheek. Making her blush and smile bigger. Tao gazed at the picture, Rae must've put it in his hand when she kissed him. He held the photo to his heart. I'll never, ever let her go again! He thought. He made up his mind. He was going after her. He wouldn't let her be alone!

"Oh no!!" Mindy said, suddenly, making everyone look at her.

"What is it?" Erica asked, Mindy held up the book and read it aloud.

" 'the wengiebats' bite is not venomous like I previously thought. If you get bitten, it is just like a really bad insect bite. It doesn't change the victim at all.' " she read. Tao glared at Blake.

"You!" He said, starting towards him. "You sentenced her to death!" He yelled. Blake took a step back.

"I didn't know!!! I was just trying to keep everyone safe! How could I have known??" He cried, backing up more. But Tao was already right in front of him. He swung out and hit Blake as hard as he could, making him fall back.

"Zitao! Stop it!" Mindy cried, grabbing his arm. Erica had run to Blake's side.

"If you ever go near her again, I will kill you!" Tao growled. To Mindy and Erica, he said, "I'm going to bring her back. Stay here and lock the door behind me!"

Before anyone could say anything, he turned and went out, running to find the girl he loved.

Blake felt horrible. He didn't mean to send Rae to her death, he just wanted to keep everyone safe! There's gotta be something we can do! He thought, starting to pace. Rae annoyed him, that was true, but she didn't annoy him that much! He sighed.

Just then, the door opened and Toby and Michael walked in. They were followed by Kris helping along a very upset Lydia.

"Toby!!!" Mindy cried, running over to him and giving him a hug. He hugged her back, then noticed that Rae wasn't there. Neither was Tao.

"Where's Rae? And Tao?" He asked, looking around.

Blake looked panicked, but Erica said, "tell him the truth, Blake. Do it!"

"Blake? What have you done?" Toby asked, stepping towards him. Blake looked stricken, then told him everything.

"Blake, how could you???? She's my sister!!!!" He said, trying not to freak out.

"Toby, I'm sorry! It was before I knew the bite wasn't venomous!" Blake cried, looking desperate.

"Shut up! Just shut up!" Toby said, strong emotion in his voice. He got up and walked towards the door.

"Where are you going?" Mindy asked, following him.

"I'm going to go find them!" He said.

"Wait, let me go. You have to get everyone to safety! There's a way out, Lydia can show you!" Kris said, walking over to Toby.

"Kris..." Toby started, but Kris held up his hand.

"Let me go. I can bring them back!" He said firmly. Toby nodded, then he walked over to Blake and held his hand out.

"What?" Blake asked, instinctively putting his hand over his pocket.

"You know what. Give me the gun!" Toby said. Blake sighed, then pulled it out from his back pocket, and handed it to Toby. Toby walked over to Kris and handed it to him.

"You might need this. Bring them both back safely!" He said. Kris nodded, then went out to look for Rae and Tao.
