Chapter Eleven ~ Never Let Me Go

I woke up suddenly, I sighed when I didn't see Tao laying next to me. It wasn't a bad dream, I was still in the same place. There now was a dull ache in my shoulder. I looked down at my hands and arms. Still the same. Well, that's good! I thought, it's taking longer then I thought, or it could not be true and I'll be fine!

I shifted my position and stretched my legs out. I was afraid to go back, Blake might shoot me. I didn't even know he had a gun! I sighed. We annoyed each other, but I didn't know I annoyed him that much!

"Rae!!! Rae!!!" I suddenly heard Tao calling me. I panicked. Where do I hide?? I don't want to hurt him! I jumped up to run, but Tao nearly tackled me before I could move.

"No, Tao, stay away from me! I don't want to hurt you!" I cried, trying to get out of his grasp.

"No, Rae, you're ok! The bite won't change you!" He said, grabbing my forearms.

"What?" I asked, staring at him.

"You're going to be fine! The bite won't turn you into one of them!" He said, placing his hand on my cheek. I stared at him, then, I kissed him. He kissed me back, it was long and very passionate.

Afterwards, I held onto him like he was my only lifeline. He held me tightly like he would never let me go. "It's ok, it's ok, we're going to get out of this!" He whispered, stroking my back.

"I love you so much!!" I whispered into his neck. He smiled.

"I love you too, stupid girl!" He whispered back, kissing my neck lightly.

"Stupid?" I asked, looking at him. "What do you mean, stupid??"

Tao smiled at me. "Yes, you are stupid because you wouldn't listen to me and you went out alone." He said, touching my cheek. I just rolled my eyes.

"Wow!" Was all I could say. He smiled at me.

"Come on, I'm taking you back where it's safe. And don't worry about Blake, he won't try to hurt you again!" He said, taking my hand and interlacing his fingers with mine. I smiled at him and let him lead me off the bridge.

Suddenly, we heard a shriek. We both turned and saw one of the bats flying towards us. "Run!" Tao said, and we both ran away fast. It chased us through the tunnels, it let out another shriek and more came out, joining the chase. We turned sharply into another tunnel, making some of the beasts lose us or crash into a wall.

But no matter what we did, we couldn't lose them. "Rae, when I tell you to, run away as fast as you can!" Tao told me, putting his hands on my shoulders.

"Wait, what about you?" I asked, "I'm not going anywhere without you!"

"I'll be right behind you! We're both going to get out of this, just run when I tell you to!" He said, kissing me lightly. I held on to him for as long as I could, then, he told me to run. I grabbed his hand so he would come too, but he grabbed a wooden stake and swung it at the bat. "Go!!" He yelled to me, I turned to run but there was a bat coming right at me.

"RAE, LOOK OUT!" Tao yelled, pushing me to the ground to safety. I turned just in time to see the bats' fangs go deep into Taos' chest. I screamed his name, and ran towards him.

"Run!!" He yelled at me, trying to get the bat off him. I grabbed the wooden stake off the ground and started hitting it as hard as I could.

"GET OFF HIM!!" I screamed, hitting it harder. Just then, there were gunshots. The bat let out a scream, and then fell to the ground, dead. I ran over to Tao, he was bleeding out.

"Tao! Oh my gosh, Tao! I'm here!! I'm here, it's going to be ok!" I said, fighting back tears.

"You didn't run, stupid girl!" He said quietly, taking my hand in his.

"I wasn't going to just leave you!" I said, kissing his hand. He smiled at me.

"My precious, amazing, stupid girl!" He whispered, placing his hand on my cheek. I cried and laid my head on his shoulder. He held me close to him.

"I love you so much!" He whispered, as he started to cough. "Always remember that!"

"I know! I know! I love you too!" I cried, "please stay with me! Please!"

Tao smiled and gently kissed my cheek. "I'll love you forever! I'll always be with you!" He whispered, giving me one last kiss. Then, he closed his eyes for the last time. I held him and cried, begging him to stay with me.

"Rae!! Rae!!" I suddenly heard Kris calling me. I didn't answer, I just held on to Tao. "Oh my gosh!" Kris said, as he ran up. He knelt next to me and placed his fingers on Tao's pulse. I saw a wave of emotions go through him. Pain, sadness, regret, anger. Suddenly, we heard the wengiebats' shrieks in the distance.

"Rae, we need to go! We need to go now!" He said, fighting back his own emotions.

"No, no, I can't leave him!" I whispered, holding onto him tighter.

"Rae, there's more wengiebats coming, we have to go!" He said, gently grabbing my arms.

"I'm not leaving him!" I said, starting to cry again.

"Rae, he's gone! I'm sorry!" Kris said, hugging me from behind. I was crying again, I couldn't just leave him here! There were more shrieks, closer this time. Kris looked towards the noise, then, he reached down and picked me up in his arms. Before he did though, I grabbed the photo of the two of us together. Then I realized that Kris was taking me away. Away from Tao.

"No, no, put me down! I can't leave him! Tao!!" I cried, starting to sob. Kris held me tighter and ran faster as more bats started to come out. Their shrieks were deafening. I saw them surround Taos' body, Kris saw too and immediately turned so I couldn't see. I held onto Kris tightly and sobbed into his shoulder as he carried me away.

Taaaaaaoooooo!!!!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭 Don't worry!!! We'll be ok!!!!
