Chapter Nine ~ Heartbreak

Meanwhile, Tao was pacing back and forth. Where was Rae? Did something happen to her? He felt like panicking! He felt horrible! He let his beautiful girlfriend walk right into danger! Toby is going to kill me! He thought.

"Will you stop pacing? You're stressing me out!" Blake said, grabbing Tao and making him sit.

"But Rae is out there! I couldn't stop her! What if she got hurt? Or what if she was...." He couldn't bring himself to say the last word. He shuddered.

"Just don't think about it!" Blake said. Just then, Tao noticed Erica and Mindy poring over a book.

"What are you girls doing?" Blake asked, clearly noticing it too.

"We found a book about the creatures! They are called Wengiebats. There was a guy who was trapped here before and wrote about it. He thinks they're aliens of some sort!" Mindy told him. Erica nodded and showed them.

"It's more like a notebook with scribbling in it!" She said.

"Can I see that?" Tao asked, taking it from Erica. He read something from it, then said, "oh no! No! I have to find Rae!"

"What's wrong?" Blake asked.

" 'the Wengiebats' bite is venomous, it turns it's victims into its own kind'! I have to find Rae before it's too late!!!" He said, dropping the book and starting towards the door. Just then, it opened and Rae walked in.

"Rae!!" Tao cried, running over and putting his arms around her. He loosened his grip when she winced. "Are you ok?" He asked her quietly.

"I'm fine!" She whispered. To the group, she said, "the entrance is blocked off! We need to find another way out!"

"Oh, great! We're going to die in here!" Blake said, sitting down and putting his head in his hands.

"Blake! Don't lose hope that quickly!" Erica cried, running over to him.

"Is there any sign of the others?" Mindy asked Rae.

"I didn't find anyone, but I discovered what those creatures are." Rae said, pulling her phone out and showing them a picture. Tao looked at it closely. Someone had written a warning to them. Well, maybe not them specifically. Only people who got trapped in the mines.

"Rae, your shoulder! What happened?" Blake asked suddenly. Rae looked surprised.

"I fell, I'm fine!" She said. Tao gave Blake a look, but that didn't stop him. He walked over to Rae and looked at her shoulder.

"That's a bite mark! Did one of those things bite you??" He asked, grabbing her arm.

"Blake!! Let go!" She cried, Tao immediately ran to her side.

"Let her go!" He said, getting in between them.

"She didn't answer my question! Did you get bitten?" He asked her, looking at her intensely.

"Yes, but it's ok! It will heal!" Rae said, pulling her arm away.

"You don't understand! If you get bitten then you turn into one of them!" Blake said, "you have to leave!"

"That's impossible! I feel fine!" Rae protested, Tao was staying by her side, and Mindy had run up to her too.

"I lost my brother, Blake! Don't make me lose my sister too!" She said.

"I'm trying to you keep you all safe!" Blake said, then, he pulled out a gun and pointed it at Rae. "Leave now or I will shoot you!" He growled.

"No!!" Mindy cried, Erica stared at him in shock.

"Blake, you're not a murderer!" She cried, staring at her brother.

"Leave now!" Blake yelled, going towards Rae. Tao got between them again.

"Stop!! Just stop!! We'll leave! We'll go somewhere else!" He said, holding Rae behind him.

"No, I'll leave!" Rae said, stepping out from behind him.

"Rae, no! I'm not letting you go alone again!" He said, taking her hands.

"Tao, if what they say is true, then I don't want to hurt you!" She replied, tearing up. Tao put his arms around her.

"I can't let you go!" He whispered, for only her to hear. She put her arms around his waist and buried her face in his chest.

"I'm sorry!" She whispered, hugging him tightly. Tao hated this, he hated that this happened and now he was being forced to say goodbye to the love of his life. She looked up at him with tear filled eyes.

"I love you!" She said, pressing her lips against his. Tao kissed her for a long time. Then, she broke away from him, and after hugging a sobbing Mindy, she went out. Quietly accepting her fate. Tao couldn't do anything except cry. He knelt down on the floor and sobbed. He felt Mindy hugging him from behind, crying into his back. He was slightly aware of Erica and Blake arguing, but he didn't care. He just wanted to go after Rae and never let her go!
