Chapter 10
I finish telling Trent everything and keep my gaze on my lap as I let him digest it all. I'm nervous about how he's going to react, if he'll believe me, but it feels good to have told someone. Since Mr. Townes brushed me off I've carried this all with me and I was glad I got to finally tell my story.
When we sit in silence for what feels like long enough I look up to Trent to try and gauge his reaction. He's sitting stiffly, his hands clenched on his lap, his eyes hard as he glares daggers into the wall.
"Trent?" I ask cautiously. When he doesn't respond, I place a hand over one of his clenched ones. His gaze immediately turns to me when he feels my touch. My heart starts racing uncomfortably when he looks me in the eye.
He's not him. I assure myself. Reliving that night and then looking at someone who looks identical to my rapist, sends my body into a panic even when my mind knows Trent would never do that to me.
"You can trust me Blondie," he finally says in a soft voice that doesn't match the tension in his body.
I smile slightly; he unclenches his hands and lifts them to rub the lingering tears from my cheeks. "You are so strong Cali," he tells me, keeping his hands on my face. "Thank you for letting me in, I promise you I'm going to make things right for you," he says.
I look at him in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"You will get justice Cali. We may not have evidence, but I can look into getting the security tapes from that night, we will make him pay for what he did to you," Trent says with a look of pure determination.
"No!" I say in panic. His eyebrows furrow. "Trent you said I can trust you!"
He shakes his head, clearly not understanding. "You can."
"You can't tell anyone! I trusted you with this, you can't go telling my story and yelling for justice," I tell him.
"What the hell Cali? We have to go the authorities with this! You can't let my brother get away with this! Why are you protecting him?" His anger is returning and he stands to pace the floor.
"I'm not protecting him!" I say in shock.
Trent tugs at his dark hair in frustration. "Yeah, you are Cali, by not going to the police! This is my brother we're talking about and I'm more than happy to help you bring down my own blood, so why aren't you? He raped you Cali!" He spits out and I flinch at his honest words.
"I can't Trent," I whisper desperately, willing him to understand.
He stops pacing to crouch in front of me. "Cali, look at me. You're not alone anymore. You don't have to face this by yourself, I will be with you every step of the way," he pleads.
"I can't," I repeat.
Trent shoots up rubbing his hands over his face. "Fuck this," he grunts out. "Fuck!" He curses and punches the wall, making me flinch again. "Fuck, I need to go!" He hisses before turning on his heel and charging out my door without another glance at me.
He left.
TRENT'S POV
I don't know what Cali was so afraid of, but her insistence on keeping this between us was driving my already angry self up the wall. I couldn't control it anymore and I needed to get out of there before I said something I'd regret. I need to let this tension out and I know exactly how.
The elevator opens and I walk to the very door that Cali was unwilling carried into just weeks ago. I slam my fist on the door, until he opens up. He stares at me with a look of confusion and my anger has only amplified.
