Chapter 31
TRENT'S POV
I lay back on the bed with the woman I love wrapped in my arms. I look at the clock that blinks 12:03. It's officially the New Year. Maybe this is a sign for what this year will bring. And considering I just earned my title as CEO of Townes Hotels, my brother is officially in jail, as well as finding out Cali is in love with me too.
Link had told me that he was in the back of the ballroom while I was speaking on stage when he saw Travis walking out of the lobby bathroom, dressed exactly like I was. When he looked back to the stage and back, he lost sight of Travis. He started wandering the hotel looking for him, but when he couldn't find him he decided to seek me out to warn me. Instead he encountered screaming from outside my room. Cali's screaming.
After he got Cali out of there he stayed with Travis and called the police, telling them exactly what Travis was doing. They arrested him and since he violated his probation he will be going to court again, possibly getting his sentence extended. Link then set out to find me to make sure Cali was okay. He had to hold me back when I saw my brother and he finished telling me what happened, but I knew I had to find Cali.
One of the security guards told me he saw Cali rushing down the stairs when he was making rounds, so I headed straight to her room. Knowing she thought I was Travis messed with my head, but I didn't want to think too much into it. I mean what happened was so fresh that I can't really blame her, but that lingering thought in the back of my head that me being identical to Travis is going to be the downfall of my relationship with Cali never goes away.
I don't blame her for thinking Travis was me or that I was Travis. But it doesn't stop the sinking feeling in my chest. Even though she just confessed her love for me and allowed me to make love to her, I still have this sinking feeling in my chest.
I'm pulled from my thoughts when Cali starts squirming in my arms. "No, no, no," she cries out in her sleep.
I shake her arms, trying to wake her up from her nightmare. "Come on Blondie, wake up," I whisper.
"No! Get off! No!" She pushes at my arms, shooting up from my arms. I try to reach for her to calm her, but her eyes widen and she jumps away from me. "No! Not again! No more!"
I put my hands up in surrender. She can clearly see my tattoos, but her eyes are jumping around with a crazed look. "Hey, hey. Calm down Cali, it's me, Trent."
How many times am I going to have to assure her of that?
She blinks a few times as her eyes dart around the room before settling on me and softening. As they stare into mine they fill with tears. "Oh god, I'm so sorry Trent," her voice cracks.
"It's okay," I tell her.
Her frown deepens and she sits back down on the bed. "No it's not," she shakes her head. "You don't deserve this."
What's she going on about?
She shakes her head again before rubbing her hands over her face in distress. "Shit, this isn't how it's supposed to be. You deserve so much better than me Trent."
"Cali—" I try to interrupt her self-loathing.
"No!" She cuts me off looking back into my eyes. "I love you Trent, but we can't do this. I need to leave and you need to focus on taking over your dad's company. I can't stay here and be this burden to you. You don't deserve to sit around worrying about me, worrying if I'm going to mistake you for him. You don't deserve to be compared to that piece of shit, you don't deserve to be mistaken for him."
