Dan sat in his room in the palace, looking at his hands in front of his face where a small ball of fire floated above his palms. The lights in his room were off so only the soft, orange glow from the fire illuminated his face. His father had yet to hear the news about today so Dan hid in his room to try to keep himself calm before telling the King.

A knock suddenly sounded at his door, startling Dan and making his ball of fire disappear quickly. He got up and turned on the lights before opening his door to see his maid standing there. She's about a foot shorter than Dan with pale blonde hair and light green eyes.

"Hello Clarissa. What can I do for you?" Dan politely asks and the maid gives a small smile.

"The King requests your presence down in the dining room immediately, Prince Daniel." Clarissa curtsies before walking away.

With a sigh, Dan quickly changes out from his uniform to his nicer clothes consisting of just a button up shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows and some slacks. As he makes his way downstairs, he thinks about how angry his father will be when he hears about what happened earlier. When he reaches the door of the dining room, he takes a deep breath before putting on his fake smile and opening the door.

His father stands at the head of the table made for seating six people as Dan slowly shuts the door behind him. As he sits next to his father, the maids fill his glass with wine and place a plate in front of him. The meal prepared tonight is steak with potatoes and steamed vegetables. Something simple but elegant.

"So," his father starts after taking a sip of his wine. "how did today go?"

"Well it didn't go as planned," Dan starts as he cuts his food and takes a bite of the tender meat. "Let's just say that they got away like always."

His father places his silverware down and looks at Dan. "What happened?"

"The Rebels got away before we even arrived so we had no chance of catching them." Dan takes a drink of wine to keep himself calm and stabs a potato.

"Daniel, how many times have I told you to be one step ahead of those damned Rebels?" the King scolds calmly but firmly and Dan puts his silverware down too before looking at his father's furious brown eyes.

"Father, I tried, I really did but they're learning our tricks and we're always one step behind. If you would just let me use my ideas for once then maybe-" but before Dan can finish, his father slams his hands down on the table, silencing the rest of Dan's words.

"We use my tactics and mine only," he says sternly and Dan nods, looking down.

"We'll never win though," Dan mutters and his father hears him.

"We've won before and we can win again. Why can't you believe that?" Dan shakes his head as he responds.

"Because I don't have false beliefs like you, father."

Dan pushes his plate away from him and stands up as his father calls after him, "Where do you think you're going?"

"On a walk," the prince replies as he spins on his heels and stalks towards the doors, turning back to look at his father darkly before he goes. "or is that not allowed because it's not your idea?"

"Daniel!" the King yells after him but Dan is already out the doors and halfway down the hallway towards the stairs up to his room.

Dan quickly changes into a hoodie and jeans, tossing his clothes onto the floor. He runs down the stairs and is out the back door in a matter of a few minutes. As he walks down the pavement away from his home to his favorite cafe a few blocks away, he goes down all the alleyways and admires the paint from the Rebels covering the walls between buildings. The colors of blue, purple, and white are mixed together from being spray painted on in such a quick manner.

He lets his annoyance caused by his father slowly fade away into the cool, October air as the memory of tonight also fades into a meaningless blur. His eyes follow the colorful lines on the brick walls as he approaches the cafe he regularly visits. He walks in and sees Louise at the counter.

"Fancy seeing you here," she says to Dan and he smiles at her. She looks up at him with her bright, blue eyes before smiling back. "Caramel macchiato?"

"As always," he replies, walking over to a table in the back corner near the window. As he takes a seat, he looks out at the city of London and looks at the stars in the dark sky, noticing the North star almost instantly. Louise comes over a few minutes later and sets his drink down in front of him. "Thank you."

"Anytime." Louise sweetly looks at Dan as he looks up at her.

"You're honestly the best," he says as he takes a sip of his coffee.

"I should get back to the counter but I'm always here if you need anything." She stands and gives Dan a reassuring squeeze on his shoulder before walking away.

He was close today, just a moment away from catching the Rebels but he was just a bit too late for they were gone before he could get even one. If only pleasing his father didn't involve capturing random people.

I know it's short but it's just the beginning, relax
