Eventually, the rest of the school day went by more quickly than usual. Probably because Megumi kept talking and cheering me up during the lesson.
Personally I thought I'd find Megumi's constant silly jokes annoying, but before I knew it I found the corners of my mouth curving into a smile.
After the school bell had rung and as I was about to exit, someone grabbed my arm softly and pulled me aside.
"Hey after all that, are you really gonna leave without exchanging numbers with me?" Megumi's face popped up in front of mine and she gave me a doofy smile.
"Oh sorry, I just really don't know how this "friendship" thing works yet." I said quietly while avoiding the eye contact that Megumi was trying to force on me by holding on to my shoulders.
"Look Mi-ne, you can trust me alright? I know it may be still hard for you, and we can take things slowly but...I really would like to earn your trust, even if it's just a little bit." Megumi backed off from me and let go of my shoulder. Before she could walk away though, I placed my phone into her hand.
"Here you go, Megumi." I said while trying to show her a genuine smile to make her feel better. Seems like it worked too because afterwards Megumi jumped up for joy and started typing on my phone at an inhumane speed to enter her number and contact information.
"It's done now!" She yelled after a few seconds.
"Um, here's my number." I opened a contact on my phone, with my own phone number and contact information in it, for Megumi to copy onto her...notebook?
"Why are you writing the number in your Math notebook?" I asked her confused.
"Haha actually...I'm quite forgetful, so it's easier for me to just have all of my contacts written down on paper as well just in case." Megumi said and let out a small laugh.
"Um, alright then." I said awkwardly.
"Great, thanks! I'll call you later today. I've gotta go now, my little brother is waiting for me at preschool since my mom couldn't pick him up today. It was nice meeting you Mi-ne!" Megumi handed my phone back to me hastily and ran off speedily.
"Y-you too Megumi!" I yelled out...or tried to, but she heard me nonetheless and turned around while running to give me wave.
I opened my phone and saw that Megumi had saved her name on my phone as "Megu, your savior! 💕". I let out a small chuckle and started to head towards my apartment.
Megumi, she's a nice girl isn't she?
Is what granny would've told me if she was here, it's obvious that Megumi really wants me to trust her but can I really? I don't know that yet...but I am willing to give her a chance.
I reached my house after a few minutes of walking and the first thing I did, after stepping in, was opening the fridge to find something to eat.
"Crap...I forgot to go grocery shopping yesterday. I'll have no food today I guess." I said out loud and rubbed my sore temples.
I live very independently, I live alone and provide for myself. I have a part-time job that I go to every now and then, but it doesn't supply me enough with what I need. I have to skip out on meat and expensive things like that.
I could just order food, but I'm on a budget at the moment. Some bread and condiments should do. It really doesn't bother me, since I'm the one benefitting and not anyone else.
I was about to start making a sandwich, but suddenly my phone started ringing. An unknown number? I wonder who that is.
"Hello?" I say cautiously. I only really get calls from stores that are advertising their products and work. So to find another unknown number isn't new to me. The timing is a bit weird though since these places usually call in the evening, not during the day.
