CHAPTER ONE

So I’ve come down to the conclusion, that I either dreamt that there would be free food or they lied.

My eyes scanned the stall which once said FREE GIVEAWAYS, and now says ONLY FIVE BUCKS. The large container had been filled with all sorts of useful things, which I’d rather not have to pay for. Deodorant, soda, candy and cookies ... I sighed heavily, and scanned the small store trying to find someone who worked there.

A young man with a small dark mohawk, walked past me carrying two boxes. His name tag looked like it was about to fall off, but that didn’t bother me. He worked here, and that’s all that mattered. “Uh, excuse me,” I said. He turned round, and flashed me a white smile.

“Yes? Is anything wrong?” he asked, and I bit my lower lip.

“Well yesterday, this stall said everything was free and now ... it’s not.” His cheeks slowly began to turn a pinkish shade. His hands gripped onto the boxes, and his adams apple moved up and down, as he swallowed.

“Sorry for the inconvenience, ma’am. My boss said, that it wasn’t professional to give away free things.” The guy then shrugged, and disappeared into an aisle.

Sighing, I pushed back a strand of blonde hair and searched my purse for money. Ten bucks.

Sucking in my cheeks, I made my way to where all the soda was. The Cola stood in a two by four pack. Smiling, I grabbed the pack out of the fridge, then made my way to the candy.

A couple of small children, ran down the aisle; knocking over some magazines and chocolate bars in the process. Their chubby arms and hands waved round manically, as their shrieks dominated the general noise of the entire shop.

I shook my head and gazed over the large selection, of candy. “This looks good.” I glanced to my left, to see Roman Pierce deciding on whether to get a Cadbury or a Hershey. A flop of strikingly dark bangs over his forehead and he ran a hand through it. My upper lip curled in disgust, and I nibbled at the insides of my cheek.

Gross. “Gross,” I muttered.

“What’s gross?” I turned properly, to see Roman staring down at me; his thick eyebrows furrowed. I closed my eyes, and sighed heavily. Damn it Billie, you did it again. Roman bit at his pink lips, with all seriousness kept on his face.

“Don’t worry,” I mumbled, and ran my fingers over a packet of Skittles.

No, tell me,” he said, dropped his basket and crossed his lightly tanned lean arms over his chest. His plain black T Shirt was loose, but tight enough to outline his body. Roman straightened it out and crossed his arms back over his chest again. I exhaled sharply, dropped my basket on the floor and shrugged. He scrunched up his nose, and bit the inside of his cheeks; waiting for me to speak.

“I just think it’s gross, that you’re gonna eat a whole bar of chocolate; just like that,” I admitted. Roman snorted his dark eyes lighting up, and I squinted my blue ones; giving him a confused look. “Why is that so funny?”

“It’s not,” he said, then took the packet of Skittles from under my fingers. “Would you eat these?” he questioned, and I nodded. He dangled the packet of Skittles in front of his dark eyes, then chucked them back into its pile. “I wouldn’t. We all have different tastes, Billie. I like chocolate and you don’t, you like Skittles and I don’t.”

“I think you’ve misunderstood, what I’m saying,” I said slowly, and Roman just shrugged. He picked up the basket, dumped both chocolate bars into the basket and waved me goodbye.
