CHAPTER SIX

Billie! Don’t finish the hot water!” I heard my mom screech. “You’re not the only one living in this house, you know!” I sucked in my cheeks, quickly drenched myself in water again then turned it off. I stepped out of the shower, steam emitting from my skin. My hair matted like dog fur, over my eyes and I scraped it back. Water droplets, tapped occasionally on my skin making me shudder with each touch.

Quickly, I grabbed my towel and wrapped it round myself. “I’ve finished, mom!” I called but she didn’t reply. I unlocked the door, to see her walking briskly out of her room in her robe. A towel was slunk over her arm, and her hair was frizzy from bed. “And don’t worry,” I continued, “I haven’t wasted the hot water.”

“I hope so,” she muttered, “I’m going to work, today.” I stepped to the side, so my mom could pass through. The door to the bathroom locked, and I slowly made my way back to my room. I drew the drapes, and my room immediately dimmed. Stray rays of light, managed to squeeze through the gaps, but I just ignored them.

Dropping my towel, I wrapped up my hair slapped on some lotion and pulled on a pair of underwear.

I was about to raid my closet, when my phone buzzed on my desk. Quickly, I made my way over to check who’d messaged me. I unlocked it, and Courtney’s name popped up on the screen. I tapped open the message, and it read:

White! I’m coming over today whether you like it or not. We’re also cycling to the lake. I’ll see you in approximately ten minutes; be ready!

I sucked in my cheeks, and placed my phone back on the desk. Courtney. The girl who thought that if she knew you, then that meant the owned you.

Shaking my head, I made my way over to my closet and pulled out a pair of shorts and a plain white T shirt. I pulled them on, got my phone then texted Courtney back.

We’re not going to the lake, Courtney.

I knew she wouldn’t get the text, until she got here but it was still worth the send. I wasn’t cycling to the lake.

Slipping on my flip flops, I made my way out just to see my mom bustle out of the bathroom. “Was there any hot water left?” I joked, and she snorted but said.

“Plenty,” then disappeared into her room. Skipping steps, I made my way downstairs and made my way into the living room. Lights leaked through the cracks, but otherwise the room was completely dark. I pulled back the drapes for the light to come in, and my shoulders dropped when I saw Courtney arriving in front of my house. She pulled out her phone, read the text and rolled her eyes.

Courtney rolled her bike down my path, then knocked on the front door. I raced towards it and opened it up. Courtney’s beaming smile stretched, from ear to ear and she gestured towards her bike suggestively. “My bike, White?” she said and I smirked.

“Of course,” I said. Courtney let me slip out through the door, and I led her to the garage so she could park up her bike. Once we were back in the house, I led Courtney up to my room. My mom sauntered out of hers in a pencil skirt and blouse.

“Hello girls,” she greeted then kissed me briefly on the cheek. “See you soon honey, bye Courtney!” She called as she jogged down the stairs.

“Bye, mom!” I called, just before the front door slammed. Courtney and I settled on my bed. She kicked off of her slip ons and turned to face me.

“So the plans for today is obviously a bike ride to the lake, then we can go back into town and get a smoothie in the mall.”

Courtney,” I sighed and her eyes rolled up to the ceiling. She pursed her pink lips, and shook her head.
