Percy's not afraid of much. He's faced (and killed) more monsters than most demigods could ever dream of. He likes to think he's experienced enough to defend himself.

But his father is a whole other story. Being a demigod, half of Percy's genes come from an immortal, all-powerful being. Being the lucky guy that he is, (note the extreme sarcasm,) Percy's mother decided to fall for Poseidon, god of the seas.

Sally Jackson  is a kindhearted, mortal woman. She's been Percy's rock literally since birth and has never once made him feel unloved or uncared for. Percy thought this was why Poseidon had been so smitten with her. She's never hurt a soul, and could make just about anyone smile.

Percy knew he shouldn't be terrified of his father. After all, Poseidon had never tried killing Percy. (Knowingly, at least. There was that one time Percy sat in his thrown on Mount Olympus and he just about blew him to smithereens, but that's' beside the point.) In fact, he'd stuck up for Percy in several occasions. But this didn't put Percy totally at ease. Being a child of one of the Big Three gods,  Percy could cause some serious trouble if he wanted to, being super powerful and all. The gods knew this and never had any problem recommending execution when he stepped out of line.  Thankfully Poseidon had never been one of these bloodthirsty immortals. But what worried Percy was that this was subject to change. He never exactly knew his limits.

So, Percy's dad wasn't all that cool to him most of the time. There was always a little voice in the back of his head, whispering. Taunting. How far will daddy let you go before he decides you aren't worth the trouble?
