Percy knew him and his new friends had to find Thanatos. If Camp Jupiter was going to win the oncoming battle, monsters needed to stay dead after they were killed. With Thanatos in chains, they were being revived before the person fighting them could get away.
So when Percy realized Frank still had the two flasks of Gorgon blood, from when he arrived at Camp. he knew what he had to do. Thanatos had to be freed, and the only way to figure out where he was being imprisoned was to offer Phineas a deal. Choose a vial of blood. Phineas chooses correctly, Percy dies. Percy chooses correctly, Phineas dies and Percy and his friends learn where Thanatos is being held.
Percy knew the risk he was taking. If Gaea decided that Percy wasn't as important to her plan as she thought, she'd let him choose the wrong vial. He'd die a painful death and never see...The blond one... Oh gods, what was her name? Hanna...Anna...Annabeth! Yes! He'd never see Annabeth again. Annabeth, the one name and face he could remember from his hazy, forgotten past.
Percy clenched the vial of Gorgon's blood in his hand. In the split second before the bottle touched his lips, he sent his thoughts to his father, who may or may not have been listening.
Dad, please. If Gaea decides she doesn't need me and I end up dying, tell her I'm sorry. Tell Annabeth I'm sorry. Make sure she knows I'll find her someday. I won't forget. Not again.
