When Percy showed up at Camp Jupiter, Hazel didn't know what to think. It had been a rather boring day for her and Frank. Guard patrol was typically rather dull.
Until Percy came, that is. Hazel had definitely NOT expected to see a tall, muscular demigod carrying an old woman (who Hazel later figured out was Juno) to the entrance of camp. In the moment she'd been terrified, and she knew Frank had been too. But they allowed the son of Neptune to enter nonetheless. Unable to reject a demigod in need, they helped keep the monsters at bay until Percy could cross the Little Tiber and enter safely into camp Jupiter.
Hazel's heart dropped into her stomach when one of them nabbed Frank. She'd thought, This is it. My only friend, carried away by demon ladies offering samples of Cheese n' Wieners. But before she could worry too much, Percy had stepped in and saved the day with his freaky mind-over-water powers.
Hazel had never seen anything like it. Sure, her own powers were strong. But Percy's were impressive on a whole other level. They were aw-inspiring. There was no shame in his actions, no need to hide what he could do from the people around him. The water bent to his will and he saved the day.
That was why Percy had earned Hazel's respect from the beginning. He came to a place where nobody knew him and did everything he could, used his powers without caring what others would think of him, to save one of their own. To save Frank.
