She stood rooted to her spot, her phone hanging loosely on her ear by the help of her trembling hand.

"e-excuse me?" she choked out.

"I know sweetie, it's hard to believe but please lily, come to the hospital now"

Lily couldn't believe it. Carol, the only human being who had taken care of her when their family found out she had asthma and dyslexia. The only person who had encouraged lily to read so as to better herself and when she finally got better, she was the one to cry tears of joy. The one who had changed her diapers since birth. Nursed her, fed her. Gave her a place to stay. Was now in hospital on the verge of death.

But how had she not seen this coming? She wasn't a young woman anyway. But this was so abrupt, too soon. She wasn't ready to watch her grandma leave before seeing her grandchildren. She didn't want that to happen. She couldn't believe this. She found herself grabbing Ethan and asking him to drive her to hospital as she held back the tears that fought to escape her eyes.

Ethan was worried, not a single word was uttered on the way as Grayson and Stephanie sat in the back of the car, just as confused as Ethan. No one dared to speak and quite frankly, lily was thankful no one questioned her. She wasn't sure of it herself, so she wasn't going to believe it until she saw it.

They pulled up at the hospital and lily got out and Ethan came out with her. The rest remained, not wanting to be a burden.

"lily! Lils!" Ethan shouted after her, as she looked at her phone getting the room number and hurrying past people.

She got to the reception with Ethan following hopelessly behind, the tone in her vice had changed and instead of being sad, it was spoken with desperation. She was allowed to go to the room and still, Ethan followed.

"lily please stop" Ethan finally said and she did.

"what Ethan?!What?! "

"what's going on?why are we suddenly at a hospital?" he asked.

"you don't have to be here, if you don't want to, gladly leave. I just need to see if my grandma is OK" she said, pain in her voice.

Ethan grabbed her hand and interlocked their fingers. They walked together to the room, Ethan by her side mostly for moral support. They got to the ward and as soon as they walked in, she broke down. Her grandmother was connected to so many machines and iv's. She looked as if she was on her last breath. Her mother stood beside her the bed, sobbing while holding Carol's hand. Her father was on the other end, on the phone with other relatives.

A bunch of other people that lived in aussie who were related to Lily were there too. She walked to her mother, letting go of Ethan, who stood in his spot not wanting to interrupt any moment.

"so you finally come when she's about to die huh?" lily speaks.

Her mother looks up, clearly offended.

"just be happy I even came. Be happy I was here for her. I tried my best"

"your best. Your fucking best, is leaving your child at your own mother's doorstep, no letter, no message, no nothing and you disappear into thin air, with dad over there only to show up today. When she's not in state to even talk to you? That's your best?" she asked.

Ethan was taken a back, he could have never known that she was this neglected. That she was this alone. It was a big shock to him.

"when you found out I had asthma and dyslexia you left! What type of mother are you? You don't even deserve to be here next to grandma, Cause she is such an honorable woman who deserves the world and more. She deserves more that she got. Definitely way more, " lily said, not wanting to continue yet having so much to say.

"fine" her mother scoffed and was out of the room before lily could even blink her eyes. And when she did blink, her dad was following her out too.

Ethan walked to her and held her. Knowing she just needed someone at this moment. The rest of the family members exited, feeling as if lily needed to be left alone with the boy.
