Chapter 2;  Kamren

My first shift was about two months before Alayna’s. School had just ended a few days ago, and I stayed home even though Alayna told me to go over around two. I had just woken up at one, my head pounding so hard that my vision blurred and I had trouble walking. 

My sister, Audrey, already left for work at nine, leaving me alone in the house as I stumbled through it trying to find aspirin to cure my pounding head. To make things even worse, when I finally made it to the bathroom my stomach rolled and I almost threw up on the new rug Audrey bought at the store last week. The bottle on the aspirin said to take two every six to eight hours, but I took an extra one because my head hurt so bad that I just didn’t care.

I swallowed them with water from the sink, my hand shaking. 

I went into the kitchen to get something to eat-I thought that maybe that’s why I was feeling so ill. By the time I actually made it to the kitchen, which isn’t that far from the bathroom, sweat was dripping down my face and I could feel a drop run down to the tip of my noise and hear it hit the ground. Everything around me got so loud I could feel it in my skull, making my headache worse- if that was even possible. 

My feet gave out and I dropped to the ground, my back cracking as I hit the floor. But it wasn’t the floor that cracked my back- it was my first shift, I realized as I could feel every hair of fur spurt out of my body. It was shaggy and darker then my hair, almost black. My skin stretched over my moving bones, become bigger to fit over them. My fingers grew into different shapes as a tail grew out of my backside. I had claws, and a giant muzzle, and I was huge. 

I made my way to my room, completely amazed and exhilarated. The pads on my paws slid across the flooring though, making me slip and slid my entire way there. Which wasn’t very different from how I was in human form. I had time to mull over how fast the change was and I could hear clearly in my head what Audrey told me about fast shifting for the first time.  “People that shift fast the first time are always mated to an Alpha. Hopefully you’ll be mated to one so it’ll go by faster than mine did.”  

I stretched my giant paws out on the ground, rolling onto my side to take a nap. Who knew that becoming a giant wolf for the first time would be so tiring? 

When I woke up I was back in human form. Naked. Which wasn’t surprising because when I was shifting I could hear the sound of my clothing shredding into pieces on the kitchen floor. I took a quick shower and got dressed before connecting myself to a three-way call with Dylan and Alayna to tell them about the shift. Dylan complained about hers almost took three days, and Alayna shared her worries about it being painful. 

Where am I right now? Heading out of school to meet my friends at Dylan’s jeep. The first day of school went by in a blur, basically all of the teacher’s telling me the classroom rules and making us tell something about ourselves- something I found really annoying after fourth period of the day. Except for the one teacher who gave me about five pages of vocabulary to copy down.

As I went down the stairs I thought about how much everything and everyone has changed since the shift- in appearance anyway. It seems that as wolves we could no longer get pimples, not that I was complaining, and that everything in my body matured, including my chest and backside. My skin was tan and my eyelashes were long and framing my eyes in a pretty way. I no longer had the urge to chomp on my nails or stress about my hair. My curly hair didn’t change- unfortunately, but the frizz went down, making it possible for me to leave it curly every once in a while without hair product. It grew longer over the summer, now coming down a little bit below my belly button. 

Today my dark curls were pulled back into a neat ponytail, swaying back and forth as I skipped merrily to the car as I got closer and closer to Dylan’s jeep.
