Connor closed his eyes only for a brief moment, but once he opened them, he was looking out upon the zen garden. However, something was different from his last visit. Its usually peaceful and bright nature was slightly tarnished by a few gloomy clouds that hung in the sky.
Looking over to the center island, Connor saw Amanda tending to the plant life that grew up the trunk of a large synthetic tree. As he began to walk over the bridge, Connor looked to his left to see a strange rock, dimly lit by dark blue lights. He became curious for a moment, thinking about its purpose or function, but he shrugged it off and continued to walk to Amanda.
"Hello, Amanda," he greeted, lightly smiling.
"Connor," Amanda turned to him and returned his kind, "I'm glad to see you."
Amanda put down her spray bottle for a moment and stepped closer to Connor, her face quickly draining of her previous disposition.
"It's a shame you let that deviant get away, Connor. You should have analyzed your options in more depth, for now we must replace your destroyed predecessor. Remember: nothing comes before this mission. Especially not someone as reckless as this Ms. Caulfield," Amanda criticized, firmly clasping her hands in front of her.
Connor paused for a moment, not anticipating Amanda to be so cold in her judgement of Korra.
"Although Ms. Caulfield was overly determined in our chase, leaving her on the road would have only resulted in a drastic setback in the investigation. Her intelligence has proved to be effective in progression of this case, leaving her to die would have meant losing that intellect along with a harsh reaction from the Lieutenant," he explained. Amanda furrowed her brows for a second, glaring at Connor only for her gaze to focus on the garden.
"Yes, I suppose you have a point. However, seeing as she has been assigned to the deviancy case we have to other option but to work with her. But tell me, Connor, what do you make of her so far?"
Connor paused for a moment, processing the data he has thus far collected on her as his LED blinked yellow.
"Working with her thus far has proved to be slightly challenging. Although her skill and brilliance in her field has shown to be effective, her determination and emotions have a tendency to get the best of her in important situations."
Amanda simply nodded at this, taking her spray bottle once again she returned her attention to the flowers she was tending.
"Do not let this human interfere in the investigation, Connor. The next time something like this happens under your watch, I'll have no choice but to request Ms. Caulfield's removal from the case," Amanda threatened, looking from her flowers to gaze at Connor.
"I understand," Connor nodded his head and was about to turn to leave until he was stopped.
"Time is running out, Connor," Amanda reminded him, "work diligently and swiftly. There is no room in this case for further error."
As Connor walked away from Amanda, he began to review his previous actions. That feeling he had gotten after Hank told him not to go over the fence, he didn't know what it was; and not knowing scared him. He shook his head, nothing scared him.
After all, he couldn't feel fear; he couldn't feel anything.
