With no more deviants to hunt—androids weren't in production anymore, at least not ones just anyone could buy—your job took a lull. Most days you passed your time by watching Gavin Reed and his android partner Connor tussle. The RK900 was the blankest slate you'd ever seen, and any time Reed tried to start up a fight he either didn't respond or retorted with a burn so bad you found yourself covering your mouth. That would get Reed all fired up and occasionally they'd fight. Connor always came out on top, being superior and all.
Sometimes you'd join them on their cases. Gavin wasn't an a-hole to you (most of the time) and Connor preferred your company over Gavin's so you counted that as friendship in your book. Currently you were sat next to Connor playing with a coin. He watched you play with the coin, flicking it back and forth and attempt to do the things the old RK800 could. He tutted when you messed up but you made no retort. You once challenged him to do better and were utterly humiliated as he easily showed you up, doing all the tricks the RK800 knew and more.
A groan made you lift your head to see Gavin coming with a coffee in hand and his hair tousled. His eyes were only half open as he fell into his seat, rubbing a hand down his face.
"Morning sleeping beauty!" you greeted him. He scowled at you and sipped his coffee, hissing when he got burned. A tiny corner of Connor's lips turned up. You discovered early on Connor could show emotion, but you had to squint to see it and you'd miss it if you blinked.
"What have we got today?" His gravelly voice hinted at him waking up in the past 10 minutes.
"Extravagant billionaire, a planned assassination, we gotta save him." You broke it down so his barely awake brain could wrap around it.
"Is there a party or something?" He yawned. "There's usually one..."
"Yeah, actually. Tonight he's hosting a party that's open to invited guests and we have reason to believe one of those guests is going to murder him."
"Reasons for murder: inheritance, revenge, and contract." Connor listed them off. "His will is written to his wife and sons. As far as he knows he has no enemies, but his industry is in weaponry and that brings competition. A contract killer could be anyone and will most likely be the hardest to stop."
"Let's hope it's not that then," Gavin said, drinking some coffee.
"I guess we could talk to the wife and sons, see if any might have the urge to kill him for the money. Do the two have a happy marriage?" you asked.
"He claims they do but he wouldn't tell the public his marriage is falling apart." Connor sent you a look.
"So his family are suspects. What's next?" Gavin was gradually waking up.
"His competitors," you said. "Who are they?" Connor answered.
"Blue Brigade and Red Republic. All three have been opponents since 2005, and while they run ads against each other they don't brawl like political parties do. If they were to kill Mr. Colton his company would be passed down to his eldest son, Roderich. Mr. Colton's sons help him with the company on a daily basis, so no major change would take place if Mr. Colton passed away."
"If the other two know this then they'd try to kill the whole family, not just Mr. Colton."
"We only know a rumor, they could be targeting the whole family," Connor reminded you.
Gavin leaned forward and folded his arm on his desk. "Alright. What about assassins?"
"There could be any number of people that felt he wronged them, so there's no telling what we're dealing with until we get there."
