Lance's birthday

This is kind of late! Sorry!

I woke up to the sound of alarms ringing in my ear. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and groaned as I stood up and started to change into my armor that I had in my room. I quickly ran into the control room to be met with the rest of the paladins, Coran, and an angry Allura.

"LANCE! What took you so long? What if this was a real emergency? We would be dead by now!" (To anyone I offended by writing "Lonce" instead of  "Lance" I apologize, I just wanted to add her accent in but I guess it can be offensive) Allura yelled at me, sighing and rubbing her temple in disappointment.

"Sorry.." I muttered.

"Sorry won't fix it! Ugh, anyways. Good morning paladins!" Allura turned her body to face the other paladins, her expression immediately changing to a happy one. "So, if you're wondering, today after we eat breakfast we will do some training exercises and after that to calm us all down we'll do some bonding exercises! How does that sound?"

The rest of the paladins just nodded and grunted to say that they were fine with it.

"What day is it on earth today?" I asked out of the blue. Something about today just isn't right.

Pidge went on her computer and started to type a bunch of random things into it.

"It is.... July 28! Why?"

I suddenly felt like crying. Today's my first birthday without my family. That means none of mama's special cake, none of the garlic knots, no family meeting where I get to open the presents from all of my favorite people, no laughing with my family as we go to the beach to play, hangout, and relax, no last birthday wishes from my mama as the clock strikes 12 and it's suddenly July 29. Should I mention my birthday to the rest of the team?

I looked around to see a bunch of sleep deprived teens (plus Coran and Allura) that were clearly angry about the lack of sleep. They all looked so stressed out, no need to stress them out even more.

"Oh, no reason." I answered "cheerfully".

"Wait a second," Hunk said looking at us, "July 28? Something's happening today, but I totally forgot what!"

"You probably just had plans on this day last year." I tried to convince him.

"Yeah, probably..." He muttered, still clearly trying to remember.

The rest of the team looked at us in confusion.

"Let's just go eat." I said breaking the silence.

*time skip to after breakfast*

Everyone had eaten in peace, other than the occasional small talk between Keith and Shiro, or Pidge and Hunk, or Allura and Coran. I had just eaten silently and alone.

I stood up to put away my plate and made my way to the training room.

I stood there awkwardly for about a minute, thinking more about how much I missed the beach, when the rest of the team came in smiling and laughing their heads off.

What the heck? I've only been gone for a minute! What happened in that minute?

"Hey guys!" I said waving at them.

Their laughter quickly quieted down as they saw me.

"We should start training..." Allura said setting up the training bots.

"This is on level 15, you guys have to protect both yourselves and your teammates from the 15 bots that will appear! Good luck."

Allura disappeared and suddenly 15 bots fell from the sky.

"These bots are no ordinary bots, they can scan you and find your weakness, mentally and physically." Allura said over the loudspeaker.

What does that mean? I thought.

You, Lance Mcclain, how do you feel knowing that you're useless, annoying, and just the 7th wheel?

I looked around to find a bot staring right into my eyes.

You're right, I "replied" back.

Of course I am. You're never right. You're always, wrong, you bring nothing to this team. Remember how the paladins remembered everyone else's birthday? Remember all the balloons, and cake, and the presents? Remember how they were showered with love the whole day?

This time I started to get angry, not at the bot, not at the team, but at me. For not being good enough.

I used that anger and started to charge at the bots. Slicing the one in front of me from it's head to the ground.

Another bot started to approach. Useless.

I stabbed it.

Nothing.

I sliced off it's head.

Annoying.

Slice.

Dumb.

Stab.

7th wheel.

Dead.

Replaceable.

Dead.

Hated.

Dead.

The worst.

Dead.

Just a lanky, bi, Cuban boy that should go kill himself. Happy birthday, now go die.

"Wait. What?"

Suddenly I got blasted in the shoulder.

"AHHH!" I slowly got to my feet and killed it.

I turned around to be met with the rest of the team, their jaws basically on the floor.

"What? I deserved it!" I suddenly realized my mistake. "I mean, THEY deserved it."

Shiro stepped forward, "What did they even say?"

Before I could reply, Coran's voice came over the loudspeaker. "I can answer that!"

"WAIT!" I screamed, but it was too late. Suddenly a video popped up on screen from the view of the robots.

"You, Lance Mcclain, how do you feel knowing that you're useless, annoying, and just the 7th wheel?" Suddenly my voice said, "You're right." Which earned some gasps. "Of course I am. You're never right. You're always, wrong, you bring nothing to this team. Remember how the paladins remembered everyone else's birthday? Remember all the balloons, and cake, and the presents? Remember how they were showered with love the whole day? Useless. Nothing. Annoying. Dumb. 7th wheel. Replaceable. Hated. The worst. Just a lanky, bi, Cuban boy that should go kill himself. Happy birthday, now go die."

The video ended and the paladins looked close to tears.

"Bi?" Keith silently said, breaking the silence.

"Oh, it was your birthday?" Asked Hunk.

"Cuban boy that should go kill himself?" They all asked.

I knew I shouldn't have, but I started to run. I ran down the empty hallways to my empty room. I didn't really have anything, because I didn't need anything. I didn't have a special thing. So my room isn't special either.

I sat down on my bed. The only things that I had in my room (well my bathroom) were beauty products and a razor (for shaving, I would never have the courage to cut).

I suddenly just felt rivers of tears streaming down my face.

Can't I just be happy? Is that to much to ask for on my birthday?
