"It's almost dawn. We need to do this, Dick." Pam told him.
"Are you ready?" Asked the scientist. He was setting up this big piece of machinery on a tripod. It looked like it was straight out of a movie. "The sun is coming. See it?" He said. Pam looked back and saw some light rising, but it was still dark. However, she could see it coming. "It will reflect off the mirrors. Good thinking, choosing this place to hide it." Pam's heart was beating faster than it ever had. But her body felt numb.
"Look at me. Hey, look at me." Her eyes met his. "It's going to be alright. You're going to be alright." He told her. Unfortunately, Dick didn't know that. And he was mostly telling her this just to calm himself down. He didn't know if he could bare this.
"The sun is almost out. I'm turning it on, hold the jewel." Pam wrapped the necklace around her hand.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Dick asked while facing her.
"What is your problem!"
"I-I don't want to lose you." He said, starting to cry.
"Please don't cry." He shook his head no, unable to stop. The laser hummed on.
"Any minute now.."
Then, all of a sudden, out of nowhere... Dick Grayson crushed his lips onto hers. He kissed her and kept kissing her at what seemed like forever. But it was only a few seconds when Pam pulled away.
"WHY DID YOU DO THAT?!" She screamed at the top of her lungs. She was now shaking and crying too. But now, Dick was still. Her mind was racing.
"...because I love you..." he said, out of breath. His lips began to tingle and feel numb. A disgusting taste crept into his mouth. His lips were turning green. He tried his best not to squirm with the pain.
Somehow, the sun was rising really fast. Dr.Starkly was about to flip the switch.
"Why?!" She croaked as she watched Dick become lifeless. "Please don't leave me!" She cried.
The sun peered onto his hand where she was holding it.
"FLIP THAT DAMN SWITCH!" She screeched.
With a flick of his finger, the laser beamed on the emerald, meeting the light and sending it on to the carousel mirrors. It was pointing in every direction. There was so much light. Pam cried as she held tight to the burning hot jewel against her skin, and the almost stone cold hand of Dick Grayson.
A flash of green light burst on her skin. With all the strength she had left, she leaned over and kissed Dick's green, sickly lips. She didn't care. She didn't even care if she died of poison or of that emerald. She just wanted to kiss him before he was gone. All this time he was afraid of loosing her, when he was practically dead because of her. She was right, she thought. Don't make promises you can't keep. She had made that mistake one too many times. Now she had finally learned. It didn't matter if she wanted to be normal. She was normal in his eyes. She didn't see it but he did. Everything she was, is, and can become he saw in her. No matter what the circumstances, he loved her.
More burning hot tears came crashing down as her lips pressed on his. He loved her. No one had ever loved her. And the worst part was, she didn't see it. She didn't want to see it because of who she was. He had shone her the light again.
The beam of light crashed off. The green light surrounded both of them. Then finally seemed to get sucked into the kiss. Pam's lips parted with his. She felt different. Clean, almost. She stared at motionless Dick. Suddenly and slowly, the green on his lips faded away. When his lip color was restored, his face filled with color too. For a moment, he looked normal, but still. Then, his eyes fluttered rapidly and he gasped for air. His chest was heaving. His eyes darted about.
Pam was on top of his chest, then got up and saw this. This was very different from the image she had recently seen. "Dick... Dick? Dick?! Grayson?!" She shook him.
"Pam! You're alive!!!" Both of them broke out into smiles, laughter, and tears.
"You're alive!!!" She replied, holding his precious face. "Dick, I can't believe you did that."
"I promised you."
"I love you too." Then she kissed him again. No poison. This time, both kissed back in a slow, meaningful kiss. She kissed him all over his cheeks, lovingly, and wrapped her arms around his neck. Their bodies were warm and buzzing. They didn't have to say anything. They knew what they felt. No words needed.
Both seemed to say: I love you.
