The full moon looks beautiful tonight. There aren't many nights where the sky is clear. This is my first time ever seeing the moon in full vision. Not a cloud in sight.
I'm sitting on a park bench near Alton Towers, waiting. I don't know who or what I'm waiting for, I just am. I notice a squirrel, picking at an acorn and trying the get the goods inside. It didn't feel relevant to this scenario, but I will find out soon.
A shadow crosses my vision and I look up to see a man. Hair cropped at the shoulders, purple bangs, and beautiful ocean-blue eyes. I stand to greet him.
"Will", I say with a nod. "Do you have it?"
He nods, pulling his bag off his shoulders and unzipping it. I stop him.
"Don't show it to me. Just follow me until I give further instructions", I say. He nods again and follows me toward a rather small diner that closed about a year ago. Seems like no one wants to buy this ramshackle lot. Perfect for a hideout.
Will puts the bag down once we're inside, setting it next to a window barstool. I look around, memorizing my surroundings. This wasn't too bad. The windows were blocked off by wood. Backrooms, perfect for a place to sleep. I feel a hand on my shoulder.
"Make yourself at home, Lizz", Will whispered. I nodded, not saying anything as I move away from his touch and into the kitchen. The appliances still seemed to work. Maybe I can cook up something before we can get started on...
What was it?
I feel like there's something missing in my memory, a wall blocking my view towards something that I should've seen before. I dig around my brain, searching for nothing in particular, but it has to be relevant. Something worth reading.
I find it, floating in plain sight.
But it is hard to make out. Eight sides, ten corners. A stop sign? No, it's not red, but...
Purple?
Or is it indigo?
Just then, the door behind me slams open, footsteps hammering against the floor and hands grabbing my arms. But before I could yell for help...
I wake up.
I'm still in the hospital room. But... where was I just now? That diner place; I couldn't catch the name. And Will was there. Black leather jacket and all. But why just Will? Why wasn't Lewis there? Or the others?
More questions rattle my brain as the door opens, showing Lewis and Rhys. Lewis comes running inside, flinging his arms around me and crying. "Lizz! Oh, my God! I'm sorry I wasn't here when you woke up earlier..."
"Lewis", I rasp. "I... can't breathe...!"
"Oh! Sorry!", he removes his arms and sits in the chair next to my bed. Ryes strolls in and closes the door behind him, smiling slightly. "I'm glad you're okay now, Lizz. Lewis wouldn't stop pacing in the waiting room. That alone was making me anxious." He chuckles to himself as he pulls up another chair.
"Is... Will around?", I ask. Lewis shakes his head. "He left after you fell back to sleep. I met him out front of the hospital about half an hour ago."
I sigh. So much for asking Will what my dream meant. Was it a dream? Or an old memory?
Ryes clears his throat. "So, do you know when you're released?" He frowns when I shake my head. "They haven't told me anything since I woke up. But...", I hesitate. "I... heard Will talking to someone-I think a doctor-earlier. He seemed upset after the doctor said 'We need to run a few more tests before we can do anything'."
"Tests?", Lewis began to shake. "T-they don't mean... You can't have..."
"Lewis, calm down", Ryes says. "It could be nothing."
"But it is something, Mr. Ryes."
All three of us turn our heads to see a man in a doctors' outfit. By the grim look on his face, the news he was going to give us wasn't going to sound good.
"May I ask you to leave for a moment, Mr. Ryes?"
Ryes narrowed his eyes. "I'm staying here."
"Sir, this is between family members. I'm not going to ask again."
"I am family!", Ryes yelled. "Whatever happens between them, I have to know about it. I am the closest thing to a cousin that they have."
"Ryes...", I say quietly. "Just do what he tells you."
"No. Whatever happens now, I'll stay by your side."
I felt my face heat up into a blush. The doctor looked aggravated, but he only sighed and took a seat in the far-off chair.
"First off, whatever I'm going to say next, I don't want any screaming or yelling. Just try to remain calm until you leave the facility."
We all nod.
"Second, after we took a few more tests, we discovered that the tumor has indeed returned, but it is worse than we thought."
I heard Lewis and Ryes intake a breath. Lewis grabbed my hand, his own shaking.
"Ms. Dawkins, I am sorry to say that you have been diagnosed with Follicular Lymphoma Cancer."
