"My, my. What's this beautiful gift you've brought us, Mr. Green?"
The iciness of the mysterious voice made my veins grow cold with fear. Charlie had led us down the stairwell, through a couple of dimly-lit tunnels, and into a large, dome-roofed room, paper and books scattering the floor with a couple of gargoyle statues propped on top of one of the bookshelves. It felt as though I was in a real-life Skyrim dungeon.
A man, scrawny but lithe, appeared from behind a tall stack of books and strode over to us, teeth flashing through his big, scary smile.
Charlie put his arm around me and put himself between me and the man. "She's not a gift, Cratchet. She came for answers."
"Answers?" The man, Cratchet, chuckles darkly. "Mr. Green, you are a loyal client of mine, but you should know that I don't give answers to little girls that I've never met before."
That stung, but I understood why. Who would be stupid enough to reveal things to someone you just met?
Charlie shook his head and turned to me. "Wait outside for a minute, Lizz. Cratchet and I need to talk some things out." He gently pushes me away but I stop moving once he backs away.
"I'm not leaving", I say stubbornly. "I'm a part of this conversation, so I have to-".
"No, you aren't", Charlie argued, stopping me. "What Cratchet and I discuss does not concern you. Now go."
"Since when did you become so demanding?", I rolled my eyes but left anyway, stopping around the corner to try and eavesdrop. I'm not snooping, just need to satisfy my curiosity.
Wait, that means I am snooping.
Oh well.
Cratchet's voice echos down the corridor I exited from. "Who is this girl you've brought to me? You're not one to come to me with company, Mr. Green."
"I know that, Cratchet", Charlie's voice replied. "But she's going through things right now and you were the only one I could think of that could answer her questions. She needs your help."
There was silence for a moment. I didn't know how long it was going to last before a crash finally broke it. Something glass seemed to have smashed against the floor. Cratchet's voice became again, only this time he sounded angry.
"That's her? Mr. Green, you aren't making any sense to me right now. You're saying she's the one who led the rebellious attack?"
I freeze.
Attack? What attack?
"That is what I'm saying, Cratchet. The reasons she wants answers is because she got her memories removed." Charlie sounded anxious, desperate even.
Memories... But I have all my memories.
At least, I think I do.
"So why do I have to tell her? You know everything. Tell her yourself."
"That's not going to work. Knowing Lizz, she might not listen to what I have to say. She might think I'm telling her a story just to scare her."
Well, it's working. My hands had begun to quiver and I could feel my teeth beginning to chatter.
A slam on wood made me jump. Cratchet's voice came again. "Damn it, Charlie! You make it so difficult sometimes! Fine, I'll tell her, but on one condition."
"And what's that?"
Footsteps echo from down the hall near the entrance. My heart began to race as I realized they were coming fast. Hearing the lopsided, uneven steps, it was probably Cratchet.
