"I told you." You sighed, the truck door groaning in protest as you swung it close.
The heat from the sun already starting to blaze down on you and your traveling companion. Steve slammed his open door shut after throwing your bags in the bad, reaching in to the bed of the truck grabbing the gas can. He looked down the road in the direction you had been headed, and back the way you came from.
"We have fifty miles to the next town or ten if we go back the way we came." You sighed, crossing your arms as you leaned back against the vehicle.
Immediately you jumped away from the truck as the hot metal brushed against you skin. Steve looked over at you, and shook his head, walking over to check your back and make sure you weren't burned.
"Then it looks like we head back the way we came." He replied seeing that your weren't burned.
"Well It could be worse." You smiled over your shoulder at him, the corner of his mouth crept up as you both started to walk.
"I'm game, how could be worse?" Steve walked casually, gas can in hand as you skipped around a head of him.
"I mean for starters, it's morning, which means we haven't hit the heat of the day yet." You twirled to face him, walking back wards.
"True but that means we'll be hitting the heat of the day on our return trip." He countered as you stuck your tongue out at him.
"Fine, I'll give you that. You could be stuck with someone who drives you crazy?" You looked out over the dry and harden soil.
"Who says you don't?" He smirked catching up with you, you snapped your head in his general direction.
"Hey now, I thought you said you enjoyed my company." You scoffed, punching him lightly in his muscular arm.
"I never said crazy in a bad way." He chuckled, shoulder bumping you.
You staggered to the side, grinning over at him. You came back with a playful shove, however it was like attempting to shove a boulder. Steve laughed in response to failed attempt to move him.
"Jesus, are you made out of solid rock." You asked, looking up at him. "I swear, by now you should of loss some muscle mass, I never see you work out."
"I work out while you sleep in." He shrugged.
The two of you walked in silence through the Nevada desert. Some how you had convinced him about driving through Las Vegas. You didn't want to stop, just to see the lights of sin city. When you drove through the last town you had told him that you should stop and get gas, but he assured you that you both would be fine till the next town.
"Think we'll see any aliens?"
"What?" He questioned, you looked over and he had his brows furrowed at you.
"You know, little green men with huge eyes and fly space ships." You laughed, snaking your arm in around his elbow as you walked. "We are in Nevada and Area 51 where they take them and all. Come on, please tell me you believe."
"I'm pretty sure aliens aren't green." He chuckled.
"Uh, yes they are. People have photos of them you know. They have huge egg shaped heads and giant black eyes. They also like to probe people and mutilate cows." You quipped back.
"Why would they do that?" Steve asked, the town was finally on the horizon as the heat really started to beat down on you both.
"Who knows, that's just what people say." You shrugged, your heart soared as you saw the town looming ahead.
Sweat had pooled in your lower back, and all you wanted to do was sit and cool down. At the same time you were dreading it, knowing that the return trip would be a million times worse. You looked up at Steve, sweat was trickling down his temple, his shirt clinging to him much like your own.
"So," He started, looking down at you. "We have two options. Walking back as soon as we get gas would be a bad idea, we'd risk heat exhaustion. We can either hang around in town till sun sets and walk back when it's cool or get a hotel room and wait till morning."
"Well, going to night is a bad idea, that's when rattlers come out, along with a bunch of other predators cause the heat has started to dissipate. And we won't be able to see them as well. So I think our smarter option is to get a hotel room." You replied, thankful for him giving options that didn't include walking right back. "Hopefully we can find one with a pool and store with bathing suits."
"I guess we'll have to see, now won't we."
An hour later you had secured a hotel room, opting for one room as both of you had become accustomed to being around each other. It's not like anything happened but being close to each other gave you both something that you realized you had been missing. It wasn't something that either of you talked about, it was just there.
You had managed to find a swim suit, and changed into it. You stepped out of the bathroom, Steve was setting on the edge of the bed in swim trunks. He was casually flipping through the tv when he looked over hearing the door open. His eyes opened a little wider as they traveled over your body, you could feel heat creep up your face, suddenly feeling exposed.
"You ready?" You spoke up breaking him out of his trance.
Steve nodded, handing you a towel that was on the bed next to him. You wrapped the terry cloth fabric around your waist, as he flung his over his bare shoulder. You tried not to stare at his toned back as he walked over to the hotel door, opening it for you. You kept your breathing even as you pass in front of him, his eyes never wavering from you.
He was attractive, there was no denying that. But you had grown accustom to just being his friend and travel companion you had forgotten just how attractive he was. Seeing him without his shirt on, it was a slap in your face that reminded you exactly how attractive he was. You tried to pull your brain to focus on everything or anything other then the man who was currently walking behind you to the pool.
"No wonder I couldn't shove you, you are made of granite." You finally stated, cursing yourself mentally when you heard him chuckle from behind you.
Once inside the gates of the pool, you placed your towel on an open chair, refusing to look at Steve. You walked over to the edge, looking down into the crystal clear water. Steve stepped up beside you, having shucked off his shoes next to where you had taken yours off.
"Looks good." He breathed, his eyes had landed on you.
You bit your bottom lip, giggling to yourself. You cannon balled in without warning, the cold water enveloping around you instantly. Steve jumped in just as you surfaced, sending a wake of water right to your face. He swam to the other side without breaking for air, his body gliding effortlessly through the water.
When he surfaced, his hair was plastered to his face. He looked over at you and smiled.
"You're right, pool was definitely needed." He admitted as you swam over to him. "Still not sold on aliens being green though, you did see the news reports about the attack on New York a couple years back."
"Yes, I did. But since those things were clad head to toe in armor, we'll never know." You stuck your tongue out at him.
"Okay, and what about that Thor guy, he's alien." Steve smirked, wondering what your thoughts had been on the attack.
"Meh, I don't think he is one. Don't trust the government, never have. My dad told me some crazy things he dealt with when he was in army." You responded, dipping your head back in the water, allowing the coolness to slip up your scalp.
"So you don't believe the reports?" He eyed you curiously.
"I have mixed feelings on it. On the avengers." You half chuckled. "While I hope that the reports are real and it's still hard to grasp onto the notion that there are people out there willing to sacrifice their own lives for the greater good. That they are looking out for us, I hope they have someone looking out for them. Cause that seems like an awfully big burden for anyone to bare."
"Even when bad things have happened when they've been around?" He asked a hint of dispair in his words, looking over the surface of the pool as the two of you huddled together in the corner.
"Bad things happen regardless, but at least they try and do something about it." You told him. Slowly Steve turned to face you, the corner of his lips pulling up. "My cousin was traveling through Sokovia when the whole thing happened, if it hadn't been for them.. if I ever got the chance, I would tell thank them thank you."
"I'm sure they would appreciate hearing that." He smiled.
"You know what Steve." You stated, looking over the water, deciding to change the subject. "We should live out our lives like nomads, never staying in one spot for to long."
"Nomads, huh?" He chuckled, you splashed him lightly.
"Yes, nomads. Just go where the seasons take us."
"As long as your with me, then let's be nomads." He grinned, splashing you back.
