I picked at my food as I stared at John. As much as I tried, I could not find a way to casually slip Mateo into the conversation. John looked nervous too, he kept checking the time and fidgeting nervously. I chewed my lips anxiously and looked down at my hands. "I have something to say." Said John, breaking the silence. "So do I, but you go first." I smiled, hiding my apprehension. He cleared his throat, flashing me a watery smile. "I love you Sara, I do. After Mary died, I was in a very dark place and then you came into my life and you saved me and I will never be able to thank you enough. I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you." I froze as John reached into his pocket and sank onto one knee. The restaurant turned quiet, the only sound hushed whispers. John's hands were shaking as he smiled at me, genuine love in his eyes. "So I know it hasn't been that long, but Sara, I can't imagine growing old with anyone but you. Would you make me the luckiest man alive and marry me ?" I stood rooted to the spot, mind reeling. I can't decide, not now, not with the news, not with Mateo, I need time." I moved, tears running down my face and ran out of the building, leaving behind John, whose face was heartbroken. I ran, silently apologising, to Sierra's house. I didn't know if they were back yet but I could at least try and tell someone. I must've looked very strange, running through the streets in high heels and a dress, mascara running, but I couldn't care less. I couldn't see straight let alone think, but it didn't matter. I just needed to let someone know he was alive. I stared at the door to Sierra's house, it was ever so slightly ajar. I slipped off my shoes and walked inside. "Hello ?" I called out, turning on the lights. I walked into one of the bedrooms. "Anyone home ?" No one replied. I turned around before walking into Mateo's old room. I looked around. Suddenly, I was grabbed from behind. A cloth was pressed over my mouth and nose as I thrashed violently. I breathed in the chloroform and felt my limbs slackening. I tried so hard to stay awake, to scream for help, to escape, anything, but it was no use. My vision began to go dark and the last thing I saw was Mateo's face leering over me, catching me as I fell to the ground.

John
I ran into 221B, tear blurred vision causing me to stumble. "Sara ?" I called out raggedly. I needed answers, reasons, something to help me understand. I ran up the stairs but no one was there. I pushed away the rising panic building up in the pit of my stomach. "Sara ?" I checked the bedrooms, no one. The bathrooms, empty. I buried my face in my hands, sliding onto the floor.
She was gone.
