CHAPTER 10

I had only been sitting on the pavement for a few minutes when someone tapped me on the shoulder. I looked up to see the same young lady who had just told me off, "Uh..am really sorry about the way I talked to you earlier, it's just that this is the city and you could have been a thief for all I know."

"It's okay, I just didn't know who else to approach and I thought since you were kind of familiar then I could may be talk to you."

"Come with me, you must be starving, we can share a meal as we talk."

I gathered my tired self and followed her to  some place that smelled of very delicious food. My stomach rumbled loudly, may be in protest of not being fed since the previous evening at my wedding. It all seemed like a far off dream or something that happened such a long time ago, but then my still sore body served as a reminder of the brutality of it all. She left me sitted and went to pick our food from the counter after explaining that the place was a self service joint. The plates she brought were filled with long white slices of something which she called fries. They tasted heavenly, especially after adding that thing, the 'tomato sauce'.

"My name is Anna. "

"And I am Kira, thanks for this lovely meal. "

"Don't mention it. So what brings you to the city?"

"It's a long story, but I can tell you if you take to the University, I need to register for a course."

I was excited when she agreed to take me. I had managed to get my high school certificate hidden together with the money my father had given me and with that I managed to register for a degree in economics. We were headed back to her place when I started narrating my story to her.

"You have been through so much." Anna said as she wiped the tears that had run down her face when I came to the end of my story.

"Yes I have and at times it feels like a bad dream that I might soon wake up from. "

"Don't worry now, I got you, and you can stay with me till you get a footing in your life. What do you think?"

She was smiling widely as I shed some more tears, this time of relief and joy.
