"He really did it?"
Jin's voice rang out over the speakerphone as I slipped into my bathing suit, his tone a mix of disbelief and admiration.
"Not officially, but he's already broken the news to his parents." I smiled softly, feeling both relieved and heartbroken for Jungkook. No matter the rewards, he was walking away from so much, including his family.
I tied my hair up into a ponytail, studying myself in the mirror.
"Well, what are you guys going to do? Is his mother really going to let him keep the house?"
I pulled a few strands loose to frame my face and swiped on some chapstick before glancing over at the degree hanging proudly on the wall of the room Jungkook and I shared.
"I'm going to find a job again—a real job," I said, a quiet determination in my voice. "And Jungkook hasn't said anything about the house yet, but I doubt he'll want to stay here. It would just be another thing for his mother to hold over his head."
Jin scoffed. "Right. Because nothing says unconditional love like 'I'll disown you, but keep the mansion as a parting gift.'"
I rolled my eyes at his snark, but I knew he was only looking out for us. "After Jungkook announces his resignation publicly, we'll both be independent. Free to do whatever we please."
"How come I wasn't invited? I wanna go!" Jin whined dramatically.
I grabbed my phone from the bed and looked at the screen. Jin was sprawled out on his own bed, still in his work attire, his tie loosened and his dark hair a mess against the pillows. His long arm stretched the phone out to get the best angle, lips forming a deep pout.
I sighed. "First of all, you've been so busy we've barely had a chance to catch up." When Jin didn't argue, only grumbled under his breath, I continued. "And Jungkook didn't exactly get to make the invitation list. His mother called after the whole dinner disaster, and from what he told me, she actually apologized. She said the announcement needed to be more professional, so she put together a banquet for tomorrow night."
Jin's brows furrowed. "She doesn't seem like the type to cave that easily."
I scoffed. "I mean, he's her son. She has to have a soft spot for him somewhere beneath all that Botox. Jungkook thinks she's making a big deal out of it to show him all of the investors, board of directors, partners, and clients he'll be letting down. That he'll change his mind out of guilt or something."
Jin hummed, unconvinced. "Or she's playing chess while you two are playing checkers."
I waved off his paranoia. "Kai wanted that position his whole life anyway. I'm sure she's happy at least one of her sons wants to continue the family legacy."
"Her step son."
"Still her son," I shot back quickly, though I couldn't ignore the way Kai spoke about their family the few conversations I'd had with him. He never seemed like he was treated as an equal.
Jin sighed heavily. "I don't know, Ails. Something doesn't feel right."
"Everything will be fine, Mom," I teased, heading for the door.
"Ailene—just hear me out. I seriously have a bad feeling about tom—"
Click.
I grinned as I skipped down the stairs toward the backyard, ignoring the constant buzzing of Jin spamming my phone with texts.
