My mouth hung open as shock and horror took over my mind. Multiple questions started forming in my head.
Doesn't remember me? Will she ever remember me? I thought sadly.
I shook my head trying to not think so pessimistically. I couldn't say anything. She stared at me with sadness in her eyes.
"I'm sorry. I wish I could remember," she said looking down at her hands. "You've been so kind to me you don't deserve this."
The door opened and Sarah walked in cheerfully.
"Emily its so good to see you awake and well," she said walking over not noticing the tension. "Now how are we feeling today?"
She walked over to the monitors on the other side of the bed humming softly. I couldn't help the smile at her bubbly personality. She crouched down near Emily looking at her softly.
"Okay, I think. My legs feel numb," she said.
"Well that is because Jake told us that you had a panic attack with the other pain medicine and your injury," she said standing up pointing to her own thigh around where her injury was. "Is a very deep injury sweetie. We tried an injection this time and so you don't injure yourself further we injected your other leg too."
She looked down a little frustrated and Sarah tapped her forehead laughing softly.
"Soon you will be all better you know," she said softly. "Come on smile sweetie. Your lips haven't smiled in a while and I think we all want to see it again."
Quickly she tickled her and Emily started giggling trying to escape her. I smiled happily seeing Emily smiling again. When Sarah stopped Emily had tears running down her face giggling trying to cover herself. Something occurred in Emily's eyes and I realized the reality had come back to us. Sarah tilted her head looking between the two of us seeing our solemn expressions. Emily looked at me not sure how to say it. I reached for her hand but stopped putting my hand on the bed sadly.
"She has complete amnesia," I said clenching the sheets between my fingers looking at her hand.
"Oh!" Sarah said surprised. "Well that isn't good, but Emily sweetie. Amnesia from such a head injury isn't unheard of and you will recover your memories, you just need to give it some time."
She smiled hugging her softly looking at me sympathetically.
"We will do a few scans and check the wound once more, so in a few moments we will be right back," she said roughing up her hair slightly.
Emily nodded watching her leave. Sarah put her hand on my shoulder briefly before leaving quietly.
"She seems nice," Emily said quietly.
"She is indeed, she even wants us to live with her until you recover," I said looking down unsure how to act now.
Everything has fallen apart, where do I stand? I wondered.
"Are you okay?" she asked noticing my turmoil.
"I'll be alright, it's just a little odd, but I will adjust," I said smiling the best I could.
She wasn't convinced.
"What were we?" she asked looking into my eyes trying to gauge something.
"That isn't the easiest thing to describe," I said chuckling. "Where to start."
Emily waited curiously. The door opened again taking me off guard.
"Hi, Emily, its lovely to see you awake," A nurse said. "Sorry to interrupt, but the x-ray is scheduled for use soon and we just want to check a few things. If we don't do it right away we won't be able to for a long time."
