She looked at me sympathetically, but I paid her no mind trying to keep myself together. I walked to the elevator pressing the button not wanting to think right now. When we got to the lower floor I saw the girl again staring at me directly. I looked away not wanting to think about her either. Once home I sighed starting to go to my room feeling like I needed to be alone.
"Jake," Sarah said worry in her eyes. "Tomorrow you should visit the nearby park okay?"
"Alright," I said.
The next day I went outside like Sarah told me too. Remembering the directions Sarah gave me.
She will be okay. I thought hopefully.
I travelled to the park and looked around at the couples walking together laughing. Some of them had kids or dogs. It seemed to only bring me down though, but interesting at the same time.
If I have to reintroduce myself maybe I should get date ideas. I thought plans forming in my mind.
I started to feel someone watching me as I was watching the couples. Glancing around I noticed a girl watching me. It was the same girl from the hospital staring at me again. Sighing I decided to walk away from her deeper into the trees that were in the park. I saw couples sitting on blankets eating food together. I noticed them walking together on the pathways. Before I could really observe anyone, I sensed I was being followed.
Alright if she wants to follow me then I will have a chat with her. I thought annoyed.
I moved further into the park where there was no one else around. I moved to the side quickly and was able to hide from her. She moved into sight looking around cautiously closing her eyes trying to sense me. I examined her tall frame and her features that reminded me of someone.
No impossible. He died years ago unless he got someone pregnant. My brother could be a horndog. I thought sadly.
She turned around starting to walk away and I noticed a lump on her leg.
Of course, she's a hunter and killing her will only bring trouble, wouldn't it? Where there is one there are several. I thought bitterly.
I frowned knowing the only thing I can do is keep my distance. I moved away watching her movements. She closed her eyes trying to detect me again, but something told me she was not the best hunter. I smiled relieved to know her amateur status.
Definitely my brother's kin. Poor Jack. I thought sadly.
It proved to be simple to get away from her, but the nerves in the back of my mind didn't disappear.
We need to leave this city. Emily unable to remember me can I even convince her to trust me? What if she never trusts me again? No! She will remember. I thought wanting keep myself hopeful.
I jogged through town to get to the woods to go hunt was easy knowing where the hunter was, but something didn't feel right. I started wondering how many there actually were. I felt uneasy listening for anyone following me, but even out of the city I felt uneasy.
Not even Emily knows now. How would she react if she found out? Any normal human would run. Survival is ingrained in all of us so could I blame her if she did? What if she remembers herself? Would that change it? I thought sadly questions swirling through my mind.
Once I finished my quick hunt and made it safely at home I started the normal chores thinking about what I could do.
~Emily's Perspective~
Nurse Sarah had come in to check on me with concern written all over her features.
"Who is he?" I asked my voice hoarse.
I had spent the night crying so her concerned stare I understood.
"What do you think he is?" she asked softly kneeling near me.
"It's hard to say," I said looking down at the photo. "Obviously we grew up together, but he seems to like me. No brother says sweetheart that often. No father can be that close to me in age. That only means we were an item and I feel worse knowing how unimaginable that pain must be."
"Emily," Sarah said taking the photo away putting it on the desk near me.
She took my face in her hands softly smiling softly. Something comforting in her eyes.
"So what if he loves you? Yes, it sucks for him, but you can't worry about that. You won't get better worrying about something out of your control. Give him a chance, but focus on yourself. When you get better, when you remember and you are free from here then you can figure it out. Even without your memories, you have a life to think about and the past is only a fraction of you. If you can't remember soon then it doesn't matter, they can come back. Even some people get them back months or years later. Yesterday has passed, the future is now and tomorrow is your gift. Stop feeling guilty and rest. Jake will be here for you no matter what."
"Thank you," I said feeling another tear slide down my cheek.
She smiled kissing the top of my head standing up and leaving me to rest. I laid down closing my eyes for awhile listening to the bustle of the hospital and drifted to a short sleep.
I looked around the small wooden room and peered at the desks carved by hand it seemed. Dark shadows sat at the desks talking to each other they were in shapes of kids. The door opened and a bigger shadow walked in. All the others stopped talking looking forward. A poke at my shoulder made me look back. A boy sat behind me with a scared smile.
"Do you have a pencil?" He whispered timidly.
"Sure Tyler," I said automatically reaching into my bag.
My bag even looked handmade with pink cloths on the outside. I reached in and saw a photo. It showed myself, a younger version of me, and Jake, who looked no different, in the forest together on the ground. I was snuggled up to him with the biggest smile on our faces. He had his arm around me and his arm holding the camera. I moved it and grabbed a pencil giving it to Tyler before looking to the front again.
When I woke up again I picked up the photo looking at Jake thoughtfully wondering why it seemed only I changed. I didn't hear the door open or notice anyone walk in until the photo was taken from my hands.
"Hey!" I said surprised looking up at the girl holding it.
I looked at her dark green long-sleeved shirt and khaki pants. She turned a little to the side where I noticed her ascot covering her throat. She stared at the photo thinking very deeply. Her hazel eyes examined the photo deeply.
"Hello? That's mine," I said a little annoyed not liking how she analyzed Jake in the photo.
She looked up and down between me and the photo before focusing on me a coy smile forming on her lips as she fidgeted with her hands. Something seemed to be on her mind and it started to bother me.
Does she know Jake? Did he sleep with her? A tinge of anger coming to life.
"Hi! Sorry I took your photo," she said giving it back, "I was looking for him do you know where he is?"
She pointed at Jake in the photo.
She doesn't know his name. One night stand? I thought feeling jealousy building in me.
"Not really. He's helping someone right now, but when I see him I could tell him you came by," I said looking at the photo again before looking at her.
"Oh, no worries. It's not really important," she said turning to leave.
She stopped and looked back at me again seriousness in her eyes.
"Oh and, Emily? Be careful, okay?"
"Okay," I said feeling uneasy.
She walked out without looking back. With her gone, I started shaking wishing Jake would come back.
How does she know Jake? I thought anxiously.
