"Today's the day, Seungmin," I said to myself whilst I looked in the mirror. I had just moved because of bullying and was hoping to start a new life. I'd make sure I was extra nice to people so I'd get off on the right foot this time, instead of being awkward and shy like I was two years ago when I moved. Me being awkward and shy had sparked something in the main bullies and everyday, they would call me names like "fuckin' outcast" or even sometimes "lonely fag" and throw me into lockers. I got used to it eventually, but the bruises and scars weren't easy to explain to my parents. And when I stopped eating in order to cope with the bullying, my parents decided it was time to move.
And so here we are, in a large city where you couldn't see through large crowds whatsoever, which was different from where I lived before.
I was scared, of course I was. But I was desperate to get a head start on the right path, and not the wrong like last time, so I was almost willing to do anything.
It was just about time for my first day of school, in the middle of the school year, so I headed downstairs, ate a bowl of cereal, brushed my teeth, put on a pair of black and white high tops, and grabbed my backpack. Just as I was about to walk out, I saw the yellow bus that I was supposed to get on for the morning and told my mom, who was behind me, her hand on my shoulder, that I would be going.
She hesitated, kissing my forehead and hugging me quickly.
"Tell me if anything happens, okay, Seungmin? I'm serious. I don't want to see you hurt again," she started her sentence confidently, but ended with a whisper. I could see her eyes become glassy and I groaned softly.
"Mom, don't cry," I told her, hugging her quickly and flashing her a half-hearted smile. "I'll be okay." And with that, I walked towards the bus that was now waiting for me with its door open.
"I love you, Seungmin!" I heard my mother yell and I looked at her, smiled, and waved, giving her a quick "I love you too" before stepping onto the bus.
The first person I looked at was the bus driver. He was an older man, a little heavy-set, but with a baby face. I smiled at him, and bowed respectfully.
"Ah, a new student. What's your name, kid?" he asked me and closed the doors behind me.
"O-Oh.. uhhh.. Kim Seungmin, sir," I replied, my smile turning a little more shy.
"Well, Seungmin, I hope you like it here. Go ahead and take a seat next to Jeongin back here," he pointed to a smaller, younger-looking boy right behind him and I nodded.
The kid scooted over, patting the seat with a big, welcoming smile and I felt myself sigh with relief. It seemed that the people I met so far were okay, so I was hoping everyone was like this.
"Hi! I'm Yang Jeongin!" he said excitedly and I smiled at his excitement. Such a cute kid, really.
"H-Hello.. I'm-"
"Yeah, Kim Seungmin, I heard," he said quickly, smiling when I sat down next to him.
"So, eh... w-what's it like here?" I asked him and he paused, searching for the right words as he tilted his head slightly.
"Uhh... I mean, it's alright. We've got all sorts of clubs and groups, a band, a choir, and most of the people are really nice. But uh," he paused, looking around almost nervously. "Do you see those kids in the back, wearing all black with leather jackets?" I looked back and indeed, I did. Five boys sat in the back with leather jackets, chatting, and occasionally getting a little rowdy.
"Yeah.. who are they?" I asked, blinking as I continued to look at them.
"They call themselves The Dogz. With a 'z' cause they think it's cool," Jeongin rolled his eyes and I sighed, shaking my head.
I felt like I was staring for too long, but I couldn't look away. It was like watching an endangered species in the wild, I couldn't take my eyes off of them.
Just then, one of the black headed ones looked up and locked eyes with me.
He glared at me, smiling almost sinisterly, and then waving while staring.
It scared the shit out of me, if I'm being real.
I quickly whipped my body back into the seat, frozen as I stared at the front of the bus driver's seat with widened eyes.
"You okay?" Jeongin asked from beside me and I shook my head.
"O-One of them stared at me.. and then waved while.. smirking," I said, blinking softly.
He only sighed beside me and then began to name off characteristics.
"The squirrel lookin' one?"
"No..."
"The long faced one?"
"Nope.."
"The one with freckles?"
"Uhh... there was one with freckles?"
"Yeah.. the one with freckles is Australian and his name is Lee Felix. Uhh.. that one," he pointed to this Felix and I shook my head.
"Not him either."
"Uhh.." he then pointed to the guy that stared at me and went, "Him?"
I nodded slowly and he inhaled very sharply and quickly.
"..Be careful with him. Hwang Hyunjin is his name and he's a crafty little booger. Supposedly, he's broken into two houses and almost ran over someone because they disrespected him or something. He's also the leader of The Dogz," he told me and I suddenly felt dizzy.
I was already off on the wrong foot, just for looking at the leader of a... school gang!
The bus stopped at a large, pristine, modern building and everyone stood. I supposed this was the school so I stood up as well, grabbing my backpack and filing off the bus. I wasn't about to go anywhere without Jeongin's help, so I waited for him to get off as well.
When he did, he asked to see my schedule, and I gave it to him, watching as he scanned over the words.
"Ah. We have the same classes together except fourth period, right before lunch. You have Health that period and I have Art," he told me and I nodded.
"Okay, Cool.. w-who should I ask to help me with finding the Health class?"
"Luckily, my friend, the Art and Health classrooms are down the same hallway, so there's no need to worry!" Jeongin said, handing me back my schedule which I put in my pocket. He linked his arm with mine and skipped off towards the school.
I smiled widely and began to skip with him.
