When Bennie finally drifts to sleep, I don’t hesitate to climb off the bed and tiptoe down the stairs. I am stopped when I come across her mum on the floor with her head in between her knees. I clear my throat hoping she will look up and let me out the house.
Her head lifts up and she pulls herself onto her feet to stand. The look that is on her face is emotionless, just like her daughter. In fact, I can actually see the resemblance between her and Bennie.
“Is she- she okay?” She whispers.
I shrug my shoulders and give her my best reassuring look but I don’t know if it’s good enough. I’ve never had to deal with these types of problems before. I’ve never really gave a flying fuck about anyone, but I feel that I owe it to her.
“Are you leaving?” Her voice trembles.
“I got places to be.” I lie.
“Oh okay.” She sniffs. “Well thank you for everything...”
“Luke, it’s Luke.” I tell her.
“Thank you Luke, you’re a really good friend to my daughter.”
“We aren’t friends; we’re just working on a project together...”
“Either way, you’re a good person.”
I’m not though and honestly, I don’t want to be.
“Can I borrow your phone?” I question.
Her mum nods and gives me her phone before leaving to go into the kitchen. I dial the home phone and my mum picks up freaking out. I stay silent until she has finished her speech about me being stupid and careless and shit.
“Is James there?” I ask.
I don’t ask about Jai because he can go fuck a dog for all I care. James is still an ass for playing along but for some reason, I feel that Jai was the one to come up with the joke. Therefore, he deserves the silent treatment.
“Yo.” James voice booms through the crappy speakers of this worthless phone.
“Have you...”
“Yes.” He answers before I even get the chance to finish. “Listen, you fucked up so badly and there’s no point in carrying on this whole camera thing.”
“Mm.”
“I just feel bad for Skip though, I mean he really liked her and all.” James pauses. “I just hope he can find another girl he can like as much as Bennie.”
“Dude, stop with the guilt trip.”
“I’m just telling you it all up straight.”
“You’re attempting to make me feel bad!”
“I’m not; I’m just telling you that you’ve ruined Daniels life.”
“What the fuck? Stop being a dick.” I whisper into the phone.
“Bye Luke.”
“No, just wait.”
She’s selfish. She’s stupid. She’s uptight. She’s a bitch. She’s fucked up.
She deserves pain, I tell myself.
“What do I need to do?”
“Good boy.” He jokes and I know he’s enjoying every second of this.
