Mia sat on the edge of her bed, fiddling with a strand of her hair. Calum walked into the room, panting and sweating. His soccer ball wasn't with him, the nurses had to take it off him before coming inside.
"You played late tonight." Mia said flatly. She always seemed to say things flatly, probably because she showed no interest in anything.
"Yeah. Full moon. Fighting the demons." Calum panted, he wiped the sweat off his forehead with the back of his forearm.
Mia just nodded and crawled up to the top of her bed.
"You better go to sleep early tonight. The screaming in this ward is unbearable. Plus, the demons won't be able to get into your head." Calum warned.
"I'm fine."
Fine means broken. A demon imitated Ashton.
"You're not fine. The demons have started. I saw you flinch just then, what did they say?" Calum's eyebrows scrunched up in concern.
"Nothing. I'm fine. I can take care of myself." Mia mumbled.
"Why are you so defensive about these things?" Calum asked.
"I've done bad things because of thes-these voices! Why should I open up to someone I've only known a few days? Just because you have the same problem with me doesn't mean I'll spill my secrets." Mia exploded. She didn't know why she was so defensive. It just happened. And right now she was on the verge of tears now and she didn't know why.
"I know. I'm just scared. You need someone who knows you, who understands what you're going through. I've done bad things too, things I don't want to repeat. But if it means you have a shoulder to cry on, then I'll tell you all my secrets." Calum didn't raise his voice like Mia did. His voice was soft and steady, and full of concern.
She didn't want him to say anymore. She was scared that if he did, she would cave in and tell him everything.
I know a way to shut him up. A voice said.
Mia turned away from Calum, facing the wall.
You don't even have to murder him, just a punch to the throat. Another voice pitched in.
"Shut up." Mia mumbled, she didn't need this right now. Not when she was on the verge of tears. God, she hadn't emotions.
Or you slice his throat, just like you did to the kid in Roseward House. A voice laughed mischievously.
Mia's heart dropped to her stomach. That was it. She had lost it. She hated doing that, even though she was unconscious. She could feel the ripping of skin. She could see the scarlet blood on her hands when she woke from the daze. Most of all, she could hear the screams of the children in the orphanage who watched it unfold. Those screams still haunted her now. Mia didn't want a repeat of that day.
"Shut up. Shut up. Shut up." Mia was on her knees now. Repeating the same words over and over. The cold cement floor sent waves of chill up and down her legs. Tears were flooding over her eyes and down her cheeks. They always knew her weak spot. They always knew how to get Mia to cave in.
"What's wrong?" Calum dove to the ground to comfort Mia.
"Shut up. Shut up. Shut up." Mia was chanting it now. All she could hear was the laughter of the demons. She could see the scene of the day she killed Toby. She wanted to open her eyes, to get rid of the images, but no matter how hard she tried she couldn't.
Calum had lifted Mia onto her bed from where she fell.
"It's not real!" Calum said over Mia's shouting.
