“Why won’t you let her out?” Calum’s voice was growing more urgent every second. Ashton stood by the door while Luke and Calum were interrogating Charlie. Now was not the best time to interrogate her but they decided that they should get Mia out as fast as possible, before the ‘storm’ gets any worse.
Calum was trying so hard to ignore the voices that were creating a hurricane in his head. The demons were making him angrier and sadder. Sadder. It is such a little word. He isn’t sad. Sad is when you step into a puddle with socks on. Sad is failing a math test. Calum is wretched. He needed to get Mia out because right now she is getting this storm way worse then him and Ashton were.
“I can’t.” Charlie said for the eighth time.
“Technically,” Luke piped up, “you can.”
“Look, I-“ Charlie started.
“You need to get her out. Right now, those voices are in her head. She is alone. She is vulnerable. She is going to hurt herself and that is way worse than hurting somebody else.” Ashton said through his teeth, “She needs somebody. She needs a get away. She only has those voices at the moment. She only has a demon on her shoulder. I don’t care if she has to be locked up in her room, as long as Cal and I are there. You have to let her out.”
“Why? Why is it so important for her to be out?” Charlie asked.
“Because these voices. They are getting worse. And we only know one way to make it better.” Calum explained.
“And that’d be?” Charlie asked.
“We need Mia. We need our missing puzzle piece.” Calum said.

Mia woke up on the bed. She had managed to clean the room up between her mental breakdowns. The voices were making her head pound. She just wanted to get out of here. But how? Preston had seen her. He had seen what she has done. He had witnessed what she could do. He’d never pitch in a good word with Charlie. What would he say? She has been really good; she has only had 7 mental breakdowns and only said 134 death threats today? There was no chance for her to get out now. There was a better chance of hell freezing over.
Mia made her way to stay up but she was restricted. Looking down she saw a shackle around her wrist. The other end of the shackle was tied to a pole that was nailed to the wall. Red and purple marks covered her wrist. It must have been from all the struggling in her sleep.
“Glad you’re awake.” Preston opened the door and made his way in.
“Get out, Preston.” Mia said through clenched teeth.
“I know, I know. You might hurt me. You don’t have control, blah blah blah. I’m here to give you your meds and dinner.” Preston gave Mia a tray. It had chicken and salad on a plate with a tube of pills next to it.
“They won’t help.” Mia mumbled.
“I know. But it’s worth a shot. It’ll at least relax you.” Preston shrugged, “I have to check on the patient across the hall but I’ll be back in 15 minutes. By then I hope you have eaten half of your dinner.”
Preston left and Mia bought a piece of chicken to her mouth. It was dry and flavorless, but she choked it down anyway. There were no knives or forks so she had to use her fingers, which sucked. She couldn’t even be trusted with cutlery.
After she finished most of the chicken and half of the salad she swallowed the medicine she was given. With Mia’s free hand she placed the tray on the floor and reached for the bottle of water that Preston bought in as well.
Let’s see how long you can keep it down. Toby laughed.
Great.
Preston opened the door after a few minutes just as Mia started to be sick. It was a disgusting feeling. Luckily she leaned over the bed instead of vomiting on herself. The food tasted worse coming up then it did going down, if that were possible.
“Hey. Hey. Are you okay? Did the medicine make you sick?” Preston said after Mia finished being sick.
“N-no. I-I said it wouldn’t work.” Mia’s head went fuzzy, she couldn’t see straight. What on earth was happening?
“Why doesn’t it work? It ‘s the sedatives and pills you normally have.” Preston asked.
“The voices mess with my head. They basically control me.” Mia mumbled. Then she felt really tired. She felt herself enter the confortable void of sleep. She didn’t fall into the state of unconsciousness that ended up with her on the ground with a lifeless body next to her. This was the state of unconsciousness where she slept. But with sleep meant dreams. And with dreams meant nightmares. And nightmares equaled more screaming, more voices. She couldn’t fight the sleep that she had settled into. Now she had to wait until it was all over.
Mia was standing in the Day Room. Bodies were littered all around the room, blood was smeared everywhere. Who did this?
Ashton answered the question. His dirty blood hair was speckled with blood. His grey sweatshirt had a bloodstain on it too. “You did.” Ashton spat. He looked disgusted in her. His hazel eyes were full of hatred and despise. She had seen Ashton act despiteful before. She had never seen him purposely be despiteful. It made her insides melt knowing he was angry with her. Of course he was angry with her. She was the only person, the first person, he tried to get close to and she just killed everyone.
Looking down she saw Calum. She had to hold back a scream. His eyes were glazed over and his body was drenched in blood. His blood.
“You did that too.” Ashton gestured to Calum.
“You also did that.” He pointed to the lifeless Luke beside Calum.
“And that.” Ashton pointed to Jan. She was across the room.
“And you know what you are going to do next.” Ashton stated.
Mia was horrified in herself. It wasn’t just because she did all that. It was also because she liked it. And she wanted to keep going. She knew what she had to do. She wanted to do it.
Mia silently took a step towards Ashton. She raised the knife that was in her hand. The weapon of destruction. The weapon that caused all of this. But was it the knife that caused this, or Mia? Ashton fell to his knees, accepting what will happen next. He looked up at her; a tear ran down his check, “I just wanted to fix you.” He cried.
Mia looked away as she drove the knife down.
Mia flailed around as she awoke from her sleep. Screams escaped her lips. She couldn’t control it. She felt bad. She felt so horrible. That was the worst dream she had ever experienced. Mia wanted to get up but she couldn’t. The shackle didn’t allow her to. Tears streamed down her face as the images of her dream flooded into the back of her eyelids. She kept screaming. Mia could feel the pain rising in her throat from all her screaming. She clenched her eyes shut, trying to block out the voices. But she couldn’t, when she closed her eyes she could see her previous dream. Which was worse? The voices or seeing herself kill Ashton in front of her dead friends? Friends? Is that what they are?
Were. A voice implied.
“Are.” Mia clarified.
For now. Another voice said nonchalantly, you will kill them.
“I won’t.” Mia said steadily. She can’t get angry. That’ll only make it worse.
Baby, that was the thunder. Wait for the lightning.
