Mia and Ashton sat in silence for a few minutes before a sharp pain struck Mia inside her head. The world begun to spin and a loud, high pitch sound filled her ears.
She threw herself to the ground, trying to escape the sound. She felt Ashton’s hand on the small of her back, she knew he was trying to soothe her but she couldn’t hear him through that deafening sound. Her voice was tight but she managed to yell out. She had no idea what she was saying, but she couldn’t stop her lips from moving.
Val. She needed to see Val. Maybe she could help. Maybe Val could lock her in a closet or something.
So, she began to run. It was more of a stumble then a run, but she left Ashton standing in the gazebo anyway. The loud, piercing sound didn’t leave her ears. The world still spun, no matter how hard Mia tried to blink her vision into focus. Why was this happening? Something like this only happened once. That was in lockdown. But she wasn’t cut off from entertainment for the demons. In fact, the demons were probably really entertained now. What was causing all this?
Mia reached Val’s office and pushed it open. She stumbled in to see Val talking to a patient. Mia wasn’t yelling anymore. “Val…” Mia croaked before letting her knees buckle underneath her.
-
“I can’t. I don’t. I won’t.” Mia had repeated that over and over. Ashton sat on the cold, paved floor of the gazebo. He hadn’t moved since Mia left him in the midst of a psychotic breakdown. He wanted to chase after her, he wanted to make her better, but he couldn’t.
He must have had something to do with it. Plus, she hates him. She didn’t want to kiss him; she basically told him it was the demons.
He just wanted to slap himself for ever thinking he could be close to her. He got her to open up, he got her to smile, and now she was having a psychotic breakdown. She was running from him and he didn’t even know why.
He could only think of one thing that could cheer him up now. With Mia gone, he couldn’t only distract himself in one way.
Ashton pulled the black, sleek iPod out of his pockets, put the earphones in his ears and pressed play.
As the music poured into his ears he felt uncomfortable. He felt like he was betraying Mia. It just didn’t feel the same without her smiling in front of him. The song wasn’t the same when Mia was giggling and singing the lyrics without a care in the world.
Normally when he listened to music the voices dimmed and all he could hear was the music, not today. The voices were louder then the music and it was aggravating.
He pulled the earphones out and groaned in frustration as he shoved it back in his pocket.
Giving up, Ashton trudged up the hill to the asylum. He wanted to see if Mia was okay. No, he needed to see if she was okay.
Then something bazaar happened. His head felt as if it were on fire. His muscles stiffened. What the hell was going on?
Can’t let you do that, buddy. A voice said.
Do what? See Mia?
“Let go!” Ashton screamed, pulling on his brown hair. The normal sharp, cold pains were gone. All he could feel was warm, pain. The kind he got to soothe the voices. It was, in a way, ironic.
Guess we’re all ‘fired’ up now.
Good one, John.
I’m John, that was Steve.
“Are you guys really doing this right now?” Ashton yelled over the pain.
Yes, Ashton, we are. And did your parents ever tell you interrupting is rude?
Oh… wait.
Ashton let out a yell. It was a yell of frustration but also in the hopes someone would hear him and come help him.
Since when did you need help?
Seriously, you shouldn’t be helped.
Just stay in pain, bud. Everyone would want you gone.
Especially after you messed up with Mia and all.
Ashton let out another yell and this time he was in luck. A figure was running towards him. A familiar figure. He almost thought it was Mia. But then, as the figure came into focus, he saw that it was Jan.
Jan ran up to Ashton and helped him up. His mind was swirling around, like a cyclone.
“What happened, Ashton?” Jan put an arm around his waist to support him.
“Mia had a psychotic breakdown, she left, and I’m in pain.” He mumbled. Even though his pain had died down a little, he was a mess. He could hardly think straight.
“We need to get you to her.” Jan declared.
“No!” Ashton tried to stand up on his own, but he failed miserably, “We can’t! I think that this is happening because we were close and they want us to be apart. I don’t want Mia to be in anymore pain because of me.”
Jan just smiled, as if Ashton were a 5 year old boy. “Don’t you see, Ashton? That’s what the demons want. From what I’ve seen, they’re only doing this because you’re letting them.”
“But-“
“But nothing. You have to be the bigger person, the boss. You have to march right up to Mia and talk. Ignore the voices. Ignore the pain. Do what you want to do.”
Ashton stood up, trying to focus on Jan’s face. He had tried to ignore the voices before but it always ended in pain. This time he’d have to block everything out. He had to only focus on one person and one person only, Mia.
“Where is she?” Ashton spoke as confidently as he could.
