Jan led Ashton to a therapist’s office. Apparently Mia ran to some therapist called Valerie. Why she ran there, Ashton would probably never know. But he didn’t care who she was befriending. He didn’t care where she ran, as long as he could he could find her again.

Ashton shouldered the door open. The pain was almost gone by then, but he could feel it come back.

 You can’t fight it.

Let her be alone.

Just give up, mate.

“No,” Ashton mumbled. He pushed down the voices, he pushed down the pain they were inflicting. It worked. He just had to hold it for a little longer.

“Mia.” Ashton let out a breath of relief. She was asleep. He thought she was anyway. Mia’s eyes fluttered open, a small smile formed on her lips. Before she closed her eyes again.

“We’ll give you some space,” A lady, Ashton assumed to be Val, said. Val put her hand on Ashton’s shoulder before leaving the room, Jan trailing behind.

Mia dreamt of her perfect fairytale life. Flowers covered the field around her. Her house was cozy and comfortable. In front of her stood her Prince Charming. He had no face, no details about him what so ever, but she knew it was her Prince Charming. She knew that this man was the man she was in love with. Her friends were back in the house, playing around. Her friends. It was something that was a rarity to her, something that she cherished.

But suddenly the flowers around her started to wilt. The house that she found so perfect started to burn. Her Prince Charming’s face surfaced, revealing an unfamiliar yet very familiar face. A wicked grin took over the boy’s face as he held a knife in the air.

Mia woke up, panting and drenched in a cold sweat. She had never had a dream like that before. She didn’t think she could have dreams like that. Of course she could, because every time she finds a little bit of happiness in her life, it turns into crap.

“Mia.” Ashton soothed quietly.

“Ashton.” Mia breathed out a sigh of relief. She relaxed as she realized she wasn’t alone.

“What’s wrong?” Ashton’s eyebrows creased in concern.

“Nothing,” Mia waved off his worries, “just a dream.”

“A bloody nightmare, it seems.” Ashton’s expression softened a little bit.

“What are you doing here, Ash?” Mia didn’t mean it to come out harsh, but she did nothing to soften her words. She just wanted to change the subject.

“Uh, you had a breakdown, I was just checking if you were okay.” Ashton smiled a little.

“You didn’t have to-“

“Yes, I did. I wanted to know if you were okay. I needed to know you were okay.” Ashton grabbed her hand without thinking. Mia looked at his long fingers, his soft hands and could feel herself blush softly. Ashton must have realized what he was doing and was about to drag his hand back. He stopped when Mia squeezed his hand.

“Mia-“

“Don’t speak.” She said in a hushed tone, “Do you hear that?”

Mia couldn’t hear anything, nothing at all.

“Do you think there is another storm brewing?” Ashton asked. For some reason they were whispering and Mia had no idea why. Maybe they were both scared that they would wake the voices.

“We always thought of the Calm before the Storm Theory. What if it’s the opposite way round this time?”

“You mean the Calm after the Storm?”

“Exactly.” Mia smiled. She hoped that this was what was happening, that the metaphorical storms were over.

Ashton pulled something out of his pocket. The iPod. He put one earphone into her ear and the other in his ear. Then he pressed play. A song Mia had never heard of filled her ears. It was a nice song. It was different. Ashton seemed to like it too.

Mia looked at Ashton, she really looked at him. She wasn’t sure what it was but something was different. Maybe it was the twinkle in his hazel eyes, the grin that tugged on the corner of his lips or even the way he moved to the music. It was subtle, but it was there.

She felt like she was looking at him in a new light, and he was looking at her the same way. His eyes looked as if they were searching for something inside her. And she felt like he found it.

Without even thinking about it, they kissed. This kiss was different from all the others. It made her stomach twist in anticipation, her lips tingle, and her heart race increase. He put a hand to her cheek; she felt every move he made.

Ashton pulled back after a few minutes, rested his forehead on hers and whispered, “I love you.”

“I love you too.” Mia smiled.

Then, her head felt like a cyclone, her muscles relaxed and she blacked out.
