Too Cliché

There's an awesome song on the side :)

Ashton felt better and it wasn’t because of the medicine. A wide grin was plastered on his face as he walked to Mia’s room. He hoped so badly that she was in there. As he walked down the hallway he fiddled with the cords in his hands. Hopefully she’d like this. Hopefully.

Ashton wiped his sweaty hands on his track pants and knocked on the door. It swung open after a few seconds.

“Hey, Ashton.” Calum greeted. Good. If he is here, she must be to.

“Hey Calum. Is Mia around? I need to talk to her about something.” Ashton continued to fiddle with the cords in his hands.

“About what?” Calum raised an eyebrow.

“If I could borrow Mia for a second I could talk to her. Then it’d be up to her to decide whether you should know or not.” Ashton didn’t mean it to come out as harsh as it did. “Sorry.” He added.

“She fell asleep but if it’s that important I can wake her.” Calum shrugged.

Ashton felt his shoulders slump. He didn’t want to wake her but this was important. “Please?” Ashton smiled at Calum hopefully.

“Okay.” Calum grinned before walking back into his room.

Mia emerged a few minutes later. She looked tired. Ashton suddenly felt really bad.

“Oh, hey Ashton.” Her face lit up just a little bit more when she saw it was just Ashton and not some nurse, “You look better.”

“I have to show you something.” Ashton smiled. He couldn’t contain his excitement for much longer.

Ashton grabbed Mia by the hand and led her down the hallway. She thought he just wanted to talk.

“Where are you taking me?” Mia wasn’t scared, she was just curious.

“To find a place where we can be alone.” Ashton’s tone was coated in excitement. Mia felt her pulse jump. She could hear the roar of voices in her head grow louder and more demanding.

“Wh-what?” Mia asked.

“Nothing, just trust me.” Ashton giggled. Mia could do nothing but shrug. She couldn’t fight him. She didn’t want to.

Ashton and Mia found a closet. It was a janitor’s one.

“Too cliché?” Ashton asked. He didn’t wait for an answer before opening the door and pulling her inside. The closet was about 5 meters long and 4 meters in width. It was dark but not dark enough that you couldn’t see anything.  The small room smelt of bleach and other cleaning products.

“What do you-“ Mia was cut off by a gleaming device in Ashton’s hand.

“I took it from Jan’s cart.” Ashton smiled before handing her the iPod. It was a black iPod classic.

“But… how?” Mia inspected the object like a rare treasure. It was a rare treasure. They weren’t allowed to listen to music. The doctors were scared it’d set the voices off.

“I saw an iPod in Jan’s cart. I couldn’t just take it so I pretended that I needed medicine. I took some medicine too but really the objective was to get the iPod.” Ashton shrugged and smiled a proud smile.

“Won’t you get in trouble?” Mia asked in awe.

“Probably. But it’d be worth it,” Ashton held up a pair of earphones. He plugged them in and took the iPod off Mia.

“What sort of music do you like?” He asked, not taking his eyes off the screen.

“Any. Music is music.” Excitement was starting to fill Mia’s tone.

“OK. Let me show you my amazing music taste.” Ashton mumbled as he scrolled down the screen.

Suddenly music flowed out of the earphones and into their ears.

Ashton could see Mia’s eyes light up as music spilled into her ears. Her brown eyes grew wide with excitement as All Time Low filled their heads. The voices in Ashton’s head were turned down to barely a whisper. All he could hear was the song playing.

Ashton wanted to speak. To wonder aloud why Jan had All Time Low on her iPod but he didn’t dare say anything. Mia’s eyes were closed, like she was savoring every moment of this. This. What was this?

Finally Ashton began to sing. He couldn’t hold it in. He hadn’t listened to music in 4 years. He needed to let it all out.

Mia’s eyes opened as he sung. He stopped singing out of embarrassment.

“No,” She put her hands around his neck, “keep going.”

So, as he caught a small glance at her mischievous grin, he continued. Together they sung. They sung loud but not too loud. They couldn’t give away their little hiding spot.

Before they knew it, they were dancing. Mia had her arms around Ashton’s neck and Ashton had his hands on her hips. They rocked to and fro to the beat. Their hips swayed side to side in unison. Both of them were giggling through their singing.

It wasn’t until then that Ashton realized something. Maybe his life isn’t so bad after all.
