Humming

Mia was singing along to one of the songs she and Ashton had listened to just hours before. Right now she was in the shower. She didn’t know how long they had been in the janitor’s closet, but they missed dinner and a Session. By now everyone was in bed, which was lucky since she hated showering in front of the boys. It made her extremely uncomfortable. It probably even made the boys uncomfortable.

Mia finished up in the shower and went to the basins to brush out her hair. It was tangled mess from her dancing. She hadn’t danced ages. It had been about 10 years but it felt right. It was fun. She had never felt that loose before. She had never felt… free.

Jan walked down the hallway, checking if everyone’s lights were out.  She stopped at Mia and Calum’s room.

“Where’s Mia?” Jan asked a sleepy Calum, concern was growing in her tone.

“Uh, I don’t know. Her and Ashton went somewhere. Probably the gazebo. But she is probably back by now. She might be in the showers.” Calum suggested.

“Oh, okay. Well I search for her. She can’t of gone too far.” Jan smiled at Calum before closing the door quietly.

Ashton was in his room. He wasn’t asleep though; he was humming to himself and fiddling with his fingers. It usually takes him a while to get to sleep. These poor people had so much, too much, on their minds.  And the drugs didn’t work.

Jan continued to stroll down the hallways until she passed Mia. She was humming as well. Jan couldn’t help but smile. Seeing someone in Mia’s position is sad. But seeing her happy makes it all worth it.

“Hey, Mia. Can you please just lock your door when you get to your room? I know you wont try anything, it’s just the usual protocol.” Jan smiled.

“Yeah, sure.” Mia smiled back.

“Ok, see you tomorrow.” Jan started walking again and heard Mia start humming.

Jan did it. She made them happy. Jan put the iPod into the cart hoping Ashton would see it when she told him to leave his room earlier that day. She hoped so badly he would ‘steal’ it. She knew they weren’t allowed music, but she couldn’t help it. She hoped it would work. Jan’s son, Jordan, loaded all the music onto his old iPod and let Jan use it.

All the medication and therapy wasn’t working. Maybe Music would help.

Ashton woke the next day with the iPod in his hands. He would not let this go. He would not let this out of his sight. Not when it is his only outlet to freedom. Not when it brings him closer to Mia.

He wanted to skip breakfast and to run into that Janitor’s closet and listen to the music all day. But he knew he had to wait for Mia. She promised him she would listen to the music later in the day. She wanted to listen just as badly as he did but she also wanted to hang out with Calum and Michael.
