Chapter Three
Or, as alone as I could be with Aiden sitting in the corner.

"How did it go," Aiden questioned me as soon as the door closed.

"I don't know," I answered honestly as I slowly walked over to the bed and sat down. "I really have no idea what just happened."

Aiden nodded sympathetically. "I can't imagine how weird this must be for you."

I shrugged and leaned against the backboard of the bed. "I just don't know what's going on. A bunch of guys come to kidnap me in the middle of the night, who are apparently demons. Then their king goes on about how I'm his daughter and I must obey him."

"Maybe I could shed some light on what's going on," Aiden offered.

I glanced up from chipping the nail polish off my toes. "Go on."

"Maybe I should start with the basics. There are five realms. You are in the realm of the demons. Your father is the demon king, and your mother is the fae queen. You were born from an arranged marriage, before your mother called it off and hid you in the human world. Your father has been looking for you ever since," Aiden explained.

I sat back, trying to soak in the information. A lot of this was in the letter, but now it's being laid out in front of me straight, rather than in vague statements. I really am some kind of princess. I am both fae and demon.

"What does all of that mean for the kingdoms," I questioned.

Aiden shrugged and leaned back against the wall. "One day, you will choose which one to rule. Both kingdoms have a backup heir just in case, so neither will be affected harshly no matter what you decide."

My ears perked up at that. "I have siblings?"

"No. The heirs don't always have to be descendants of the current king or queen. Though I wouldn't be surprised if your father has a few unclaimed children roaming about," Aiden informed me, laughing a bit.

I sighed. I've always wanted a sibling. Growing up in a foster home meant having lots of them, but I never fit in. I couldn't get out of that place fast enough. "So what happens now?"

Aiden shrugged. "We wait."

So we did. Turns out, he had a pack of uno cards stowed away. Where he got them and why he had them is beyond me, but it passed the time well.

Aiden isn't half bad. He has a niece and a nephew who live with their mom. He visits them as much as he can, and brings skittles every time he does. His sister's husband died rather recently, and she's been spiraling ever since. He mostly provides for the kids.
You learn a lot about a person when you are stuck in a small space with them for an extended amount of time. I feel like I could write a book about Aiden's life at this point. Maybe that's an exaggeration, but I do know a lot more now than I did before.

"What, exactly, are we waiting for," I asked as I placed a red five onto the pile.

"For someone to summon you. I'm sure they are going to question you, see what you may or may not know about your mother," Aiden shrugged as he placed a green five on top of my card.

I placed a green "skip you" card down, then a reverse. I analyzed my last three remaining cards, trying to decide the best course of action. I don't know if he will change the color and I will lose my chance, so I set my green three down. He countered my action by putting down two "draw twos" and smiling triumphantly at me. I stuck my tongue out at him and placed my draw two down, making him draw six.
