Chapter Twenty Three
I sat on the balcony long after Caroline disappeared. I didn't know what to think. I just saw her a few days ago. She was perfectly fine. How could things turn for the worst that quickly? It's not even possible.

I know I have had problems with her, but I wouldn't wish a harsh life on even my biggest of enemies. She must be being abused. Probably by Saxon's father.

The only thing I can think to do is talk to Amilia about this. She seems to know everything that's going on. Maybe she can help her.

"This place really is beautiful, I'll give them that," Rowan murmured, his voice coming from below.

I barely even startled as I looked down and saw him standing below my balcony, on the ground. I knew he would come eventually. I'm surprised it took him this long, actually. "Yeah, it is."

Rowan nodded and looked around for a few more moments before looking up at me. "Mind if I come up?"

I shrugged, before analyzing what he could climb up to get here. There aren't any vines across the walls like there would be in a normal old castle, and no parts of the building that are poking out. It's too perfect for that. There aren't even any tree's near enough to use for leverage. This castle was made to be a fortress that could only be entered through the front door.

Rowan seemed to notice that too. "I didn't think this through very well."

I laughed and tilted my head. The only way he is getting up here is if I lift him up. The question is, am I strong enough to do that?

"You could probably lift me up, if the meditation worked like it's supposed to. But after a while, it will dim a bit, and you will have to physically make yourself stronger in order to lift the heavier objects," Rowan informed me, his voice carrying with the wind.

If I don't do this soon, someone might hear him. And if someone hears him, we will both be fucked. Okay. If I can't do this, then I can't talk to him and get my questions answered. Seeing as that is not an option I am willing to choose, I have to put my all into this.

I took a deep breath and focused on Rowan. After a few moments, he slowly began to rise. He let out a small breath as he looked down and saw quite how far he would fall if I let go or faltered. I'm not going to let that happen. However, when he looked back at me, I realized that wasn't what he thought in that moment. The way his eyes shined, I knew he had absolute faith that I could do this.

That confidence is exactly the burst I needed to lift him up and over the railing. I gently set him on the ground. I hopped down from my spot on the railing and beamed. "I can't believe I just did that!"

I also can't believe I just yelled. I tensed, glancing into my room to make sure I didn't wake the twins. I didn't relax until I realized that they were both fast asleep.

"Your control over your power is already impressive. You're going to have to work for it more once I leave. Usually the person you meditate with gives you strength," Rowan informed me.

I sighed. I figured it wouldn't always be this easy. Wait. "When do you leave?"

"Tomorrow."

My heart dropped. "What?"

Rowan shrugged and leaned against the railing, bracing his hands on it. "The queen only had to allow me to be here for a week before the meeting. I don't think your people would survive having me around much longer than that."

I sighed and leaned against the railing next to him. "You're probably right."

We sat in a comfortable silence for a moment, before the question started eating me alive and I couldn't wait any longer. "So, you said you would tell me what is wrong with my mother later. It's later. Spill."
