Chapter 1
“It will be a new start for you” I remember my Dad saying, but right now I couldn’t think of anywhere I wanted to be less. I made my way through the hallway, the sound of people bustling around me filling my ears. I looked around aimlessly for my classroom. The sound of the school bell then begun to swarm the air and in almost an instant, the crowds of people cleared the hallways.
I’d just moved from London all the way to Melbourne, Australia. My Dad had gotten a promotion and had decided it was ‘best’ for us all to move here. Let’s just say the past year of my life hasn’t exactly been a walk in the park… maybe Australia will be a new start? I couldn’t help but let the question fizzle around my brain. I just need to stay out of trouble.
I stood still for a moment, hitching up my skirt slightly. I looked down at the maroon uniform that covered my body and couldn’t help but feel flutters in my stomach; I was actually nervous. ‘Room 204’ I read, walking closer to the door; there was a daunting feeling filling me. I opened the door, my hand shaking slightly. The room was bright and fairly small, in fact it was a science lab equipped with only several stations.
Everyone’s eyes shot in my direction, each of them watching me intently.
“Sorry I’m late,” I whispered quietly, lifting my head up to the teacher. “I sorta got lost.” I told her, more confidence edging through my voice.
“That’s okay.” She smiled. “Kalli is it?” she asked and I nodded in response. “Everyone this is Kalli, she’s a new student at Penola and she’s just moved here from London,” she told them. Some of them raised their hands to wave at me, but some whispered openly about me. There was a moment of silence before the teacher spoke again, “Kalli, if you’d like to take a seat next to Mr Brooks at the back there.” She told me, gesturing over to the station with a smile. I clutched onto my books tightly before taking a seat.
The teacher turned to face the board and in almost in an instance everyone’s chairs shuffled around and a sea of whispers filled the room. ‘Mr Brooks’, my lab partner was faced away from me, talking to several girls. I watched their faces as he spoke, each one of them either twiddling with their hair or biting their lip. I hadn’t even seen his face and I knew his type; he knew exactly how to make girls fall for him. Oh I know his type so well.
“Now, now class!” The teacher said loudly. The room fell into a silence, with only a whisper here and there. ‘Mr Brooks’ swung around on his stool. I faced the board, pretending not to notice that he was staring at me, his eyes moving up and down my body.
“Do you wanna take a picture?” I said bluntly, but whispering, turning around on my stool after being unable to stand the gawping looks. He looked taken a back, but continued to stare for another moment. He had dark hair that was slightly curly and pushed back along with a lip ring that he moved with his teeth as I watched him – he was good looking, I would give him that.
“Erm-sorry-I just-you’re just…” He stuttered, pausing at his last word, his eyes falling to the floor. “I’m Luke by the way.” He said with a smile, slightly smirking still. So Mr Brooks has a name.
“Kalli.” I said quickly, turning back to face the board. He was now completely taken a back he looked down, a look of confusion on his face.
The bell rang quickly after mine and Luke’s ‘altercation’, if you can call it that. I stood up and packed my books into bag, again watching a girl talk to Luke. She reached over to touch his bicep whilst chuckling a sweetly sick laugh before walking through the door. I began to laugh to myself as I packed my final book into my bag.
“Something funny?” A voice asked. I looked up to see Luke in front of me, presumably waiting for an answer.
“Nothing- it’s just,” I paused, laughing slightly again. “The way those girls act around you. It’s just-funny.” I said, looking directly at him.
Luke chuckled slightly, running his hands through his hair. “I don’t notice.” He told me. It was clear he was lying.
“Sure.” I scoffed. “I’ll see you later.” I added quickly before scooping up my bag and walking through the door, leaving him stood in the room completely startled.

The final bell had sounded and I was stood by my locker, taking out a book before quickly closing the door. A girl stood beside me, a cheerful smile on her face.
"Hi, I’m Katie. You must be Kalli.” She said with another smile. She had long straight blonde hair, a contrast to my shoulder length chocolate waves.
“Yeah, that’s me. Nice to meet you.” I said, the first real smile appearing on my face.
“I can’t believe how you spoke to Luke Brooks in Biology today.” She said quickly, a true hint of shock on her face.
“It’s not like he’s royalty is it?” I laughed.
“Some think he is.” She paused, taking in a breath. “He’s part of the Janoskians.” She told me. I looked at her, completely puzzled.
“The who?!” I questioned.
“How can you not know?!” She laughed. “They make youtube videos – pranks and stuff. And they’re popular, millions of views and all that.” She said excitedly. “So as you can guess, some of the girls here try and use the fact that he’s popular and he uses it to his advantage.” She added. “So it’s nice to see someone not flirting with him or trying to impress him.”
“I had no idea!” I revealed. “I’ll check them out when I get home.” I told her with a smile.
“Well it was nice chatting to you Kalli, but I’ve gotta go.” She told me, leaning over to hug me. I was slightly taken a back. I’d known her for 5 minutes and she was already hugging me? I guess I’m not used to that sort of kindness.
I stepped out the main doors a few moments after Katie. Most people had already left for home, only some still lingering around. I walked down the steps towards the main road. I saw someone leant against the brick wall that surrounded the school; only a few metres away from me. He looked up from his phone and his gaze met mine. He had deep green eyes that dark brown hair fell above along with a snapback that sat comfortably on his head. He smiled before winking in one smooth movement. It couldn’t have possibly been to me? But I was the only person around… I smiled back at him before swiftly turning the corner. I felt my cheeks flush slightly as I walked home – probably because the most beautiful specimen I’ve ever had the fortune to come across winked at me.
As I walked under the Australian sun, there was only one thing that I knew was for sure – this year was going to be interesting.
