Emily hesitated as she put her hand on the door of South Park Elementary. Suck it up, Em, she thought to herself. Things might be better here. You could actually make friends here.
"You okay, Em?" her older brother James asked her. James was in sixth grade, and he was the most kind and supportive out of Emily's three older brothers.
"I'm fine." Emily replied. "I'm just a bit scared. New place, new people. I don't know if they'll like me."
"Em, listen." James said. "Mom and Dad moved here purely for your sake. If things don't go well, they promised we could move somewhere else."
"I know." Emily replied.
"All right. I'm ready."
Emily pushed the door open, James still at her side. She looked at the inside of the school. Not too bad for a small mountain town. She got odd glances from some of the kids, but she knew it was only because no one knew who she was. Still, she grabbed James' hand and they found their way to the principal's office.
"Oh, hello! You two must be Emily and James." Principal Victoria said.
"Yes." James replied.
"Okay, Emily, you're in fourth grade and James, you're in sixth, right?"
Emily nodded.
"Okay then, I'll take you both to your classrooms. Follow me."
The principal led them both up a staircase and stopped in front of a door labeled "Fourth Grade." She knocked on the door and Emily became increasingly more nervous.
"You'll be fine, Em." James assured her.
"Mr. Garrison? She's here." Principal Victoria said to the man who answered the door.
"Oh, she is? All right, come on in. What's your name again?" Mr. Garrison asked.
"Emily..." Emily replied.
"Okay class, we have a new student here with us today..." Mr. Garrison began as the door shut and James left with the principal.
Here we go...
"So, Emily, tell us, where are you from?" Mr. Garrison asked.
"Connecticut..." she replied.
"And what do you like to do for fun?"
"I like playing sports, and I love video games. And I play guitar."
"And do you have any siblings?"
"I have three older brothers. The one who was out there with me was James, he's in sixth grade. Then there's Danny who's in tenth and Ian who's in eighth."
"All right, then. I think the class has gotten to know you a bit. You can take the empty desk between Kyle Broflovski and Clyde Donovan."
There were multiple empty desks and Emily wasn't sure who Kyle Broflovski and Clyde Donovan were.
"Oh, sorry." Mr. Garrison said. "I forgot you don't know anyone yet. The seat right there."
He pointed to a seat between a brown-haired kid and a kid with a green hat.
Emily walked over and sat down. She looked nervously at the boys sitting next to her.
They looked back. The kid with the green hat began talking to her.
"Hey, I'm Kyle. If you ever need to know anything, just ask me, all right?"
What is he, the class president?
"Okay...thanks." Emily replied.
He's kinda cute, though. And so is that Clyde kid.
