"Dad?" I asked "Sam." He said and pushed me into my room and locked the door. "Get out of here. You haven't wanted anything to do with me in three years. Don't start now!" I yelled and he hit me. Over and over. "Stop." I pleaded. "Stop." I yelled and the door busted open. I saw Charlie standing in the doorway. Fulton and Portman had busted my door down. "You have two seconds to get out or else." Charlie said. My father looked at me one last time and walked out. Charlie tried to touched me but I back away. "Sammy. It's me Charlie. I'm not going to hurt you. I'm not him. Look at me. Focus on my eyes, on my voice." He said calmly "Charlie." I said my voice was going out from the crying. "Shh." He said and lightly touched my arm. "Charlie it hurts." I said and started to cry. "I know Sammy I know." He said. Charlie stayed with me that night. Connie and Julie were told to they had to stay in another dorm.
I woke up and walked over to my mirror. I looked at my face and then my sides. Black and blue. I grabbed my makeup and put it over every bruise. Then I pulled my hair back and put my makeup into my backpack along with a few things I'd need and then I went to breakfast. I grabbed a bottle of water and a piece of bread and walked to our table and sat. I knew Fulton and Portman wouldn't tell but I didn't want anyone to know about this. It was hard enough telling Charlie. Especially after the hawks game and the bruises on my arm. I opened my water and took a small sip. "Sam?" Fulton asked "Yeah?" I said "I wanna talk to you outside." He said I nodded and got up and walked outside. "I wanted to check on you. After seeing you last night with that guy. I needed to know you were ok." He said "I'm fine Fulton thinks for asking me though." I lied and smiled and walked back inside. I saw Charlie. Gosh he was gonna make a big deal outta this. I walked and sat down and Charlie gave me a weird look. "What?" I asked "How did you cover them up?" He asked "I don't know what your talking about Charlie." I lied. "Sam." He said "I'm fine Charlie." I said. I grabbed my stuff and walked out.
We had conditioning today. I was in my sports bra and my Team USA track suit pants. I was stretching and I could feel the bruises hurting so bad. I touched it out and felt with it.

7:30 that night
There was a knock on my door. I got up and pulled my hair in front of my bruised face and opened it. "Hey Sam." Dwayne said "Hey." I said not looking at him. "You alright?" He asked "Yeah. What did Charlie tell you?" I asked "He don't know I'm here." He said "Oh." I said. "I heard a door break last night and seeing as yours is replaced I was gonna ask what happened?" He asked "Just got locked out." I lied. I hated lying to him. I wanted to let him in but I felt like I didn't know him. "Dwayne let's go!" Jessie yelled and Dwayne said his goodbye and left. I walked in and looked at myself. I saw the blue bruise under my eye and my busted lip. I held myself and was crying. I wanted Adam. He knew about this. I ran to his room and was beating on the door. "Sam?" He asked "Adam. He came back." I said and broke down in tears. "Who Sam? Who came back?" He asked "My father." I said and moved my hair. "Is this why I heard a loud bang last night?" He asked all I could do was nod my head yes. "Sammy." He said and pulled me into a hug. "I'm scared Adam." I admitted "I fell alone. I lied to Dwayne about it and I really want to tell him. I want him Adam. I want to be happy but I can't." I said. "Sam if you trust him enough to tell him everything. You should." He said. Adam got up and left for a minute and I was alone in his room. The door opened and I turned to face it and saw Dwayne. "Sam? You alright?" He asked "No." I said "What's wrong?" He asked "Sam you need to tell him. I'll be with the guys if you need me." Adam said and walked away. "I lied to you. About the door. About me. Everything. I'm not who you think I am Dwayne." I said "Why'd you lie?" He asked "I'm scared." I said "Of what?" He asked "You'll leave. After I let you in, tell you about my past, my family, me, I'm scared you'll look at me differently." I said "Sam. I can't look at you any differently than how I already do." He said "What I am telling you. It's personal and very hard for people to comprehend." I said. No turning back now. "When I was born mine and Charlie's dad took me and left Charlie with our mom. Soon after I started hockey when I was 5 my dad started hitting me. It would get worse but one day when I was 12 he came in my room and told me about my mom and Charlie. He lied. I got mad and blew up. He slapped me and I ran away. I went and found Charlie and my mom. A few days later I was plucked from my hockey team. Leaving my friends and my boyfriend at the time alone. I was now a duck. The night I was switched teams my dad found me. Put his hands on me again. That was the last time I saw him. That hockey season was horrible. Larson broke up with me because I was a duck. Adam joined the team and I got hurt I wasn't supposed to be able to play anymore. Two and a half years later. Here we are. That night you and Charlie saw me, Larson had wrote me a letter. I was a mess because what he said in the letter was s lie. Last night my dad showed up here, he found my room. He pushed me in and locked the door. He started hitting me. I told him to stop. He didn't I don't know how long went by but Charlie and Fulton and Portman broke my door down. And this is where we are now." I said not looking him in the eyes. "Sam look at me." He said and lifted my face with his finger. "I'm not going to leave you." He said "Your not? Not even now? After you found out everything?" I asked "No I'm staying." He said.

I woke up in my room. I climbed up and walked to my mirror. I looked and saw what I looked like. I ran my fingers along the bruises on my face and on my side. They weren't fading yet. I had on a sports bra and shorts my hair was pulled back and everything is visible. There was a knock on my door and I opened it. "Hey." Dwayne said. He looked up and down and saw the bruises. "Sam. Are those?" He asked "Yeah." I said and let him in my room. I grabbed one of Charlie's shirts that I stole and put it on. Then I pulled my hair down and covered my face. "Sam don't hide it. Not from me. I know you now. You can trust me." Dwayne said and pushed my hair from my face. I pulled away from him. "Sam." He said. "I'm scared Dwayne. If he comes back. What if no one can save me next time." I said and looked him in his eyes. "I'll save you. Sam. Knowing what you told me. It makes me like you more." He said "You l-l-like me?" I asked. "Yeah." He said "I like you too." I said. He wrapped his arms around me and hugged me. For the first time in a long time I felt safe. Safer than when I'm with Charlie. "Now lets get food." He said and jumped up. "But it's too far and I have to put makeup on." I complained "Darlin you don't need makeup. These." He said and ran his finger lightly over my eye and my jaw "These don't define you. They show what you've been through. How tough you are." He said. "Why are you always right?" I said and laughed "I just am." He said and put his arm around me. He opened the door and we walked to the cafeteria together.

We walked in and eyes went straight to me and Dwayne. I saw Charlie get mad. I felt Dwayne grab my hand with his and lock his fingers with mine. "Don't worry about them." He whispered "That's easier said than done." I whispered back. We came to the table and stoped "Sam. What's going on here?" Charlie asked. "Charlie. Don't make a big deal about this." I said "Sam your my sister I'm gonna make a big deal about it." Charlie said and looked at Dwayne. "Charlie. I like your sister. When she looks at me. I get lost. When I see her on the ice or practicing, I can't look away from her." Dwayne said and looked at me. Charlie gave me the "You told him didn't you?" Look and I rolled my eyes. "Dwayne can you get me a bottle of water and toast please?" I asked "Sure thing." He said and walked off. "Yes I told him Charlie. I had to. I like him. There's nothing you or anyone can do about that." I said "He's gonna hurt you like Larson did." He said "You don't know that Charlie." I said. Dwayne handed me my food and my water. "Thanks." I said "I'll see you later Charlie." I said to Charlie. "I'll see you at practice." I said and looked at Dwayne. "Bye." Dwayne said. I walked outside and sat on the stairs.
