Mighty Ducks. The duck girl

2 months later

I woke up. Today was the last day of school. Tomorrow I was flying out to Austin. I was going to surprise Dwayne.
I wore shorts and a tanktop with my converse and a blue jean jacket. I pulled my hair into a braid and grabbed my stuff and walked to school. I went and sat at the ducks table and I waited for the team to get here. "Sammmmmmmmmyyyyyy!!" Connie yelled running up to me. "We are gonna have to hang out this summer." She said "I'm gonna be home for a while. I'm surprising Dwayne." I said "Awwwww." She said "I fly out tomorrow." I said. "Does Charlie know?" She asked "He hasn't been home a lot. Not since mom married Jack." I said "I'd tell him." She said "I know Connie." I said. The rest of the team showed up. "Sam when are you gonna go see Dwayne?" Adam asked "Umm I'm actually flying out tomorrow." I said and saw Charlie look in confusion. "When were you planning on tell me?" Charlie asked "Well I wasn't going to tell you here." I said the the bell rung. I grabbed my stuff and walked to class.

The day went by pretty slow. I was sitting in my science class when the last bell rang. I ran outside and to my house. I got inside and went to my room. I packed shorts, tank tops, my make up, hair stuff, money, shoes, and one of Dwayne's hoodies. I wore these all the time and spray his cologne on them every week. I didn't realize but I'd been packing for 4 hours. I heard the phone ring and I ran to it. "Conway's residence." I said. "Hey Sammy." Dwayne said on the other line. "Hey." I said. "So you outta school for summer?" He asked "No I've got a few days. I have to take finals and do some stuff." I lied. "I miss you Sam. When can I see you again?" He asked "I don't know yet. It's gonna be before I go back to school." I said "I guess I'll have to wait it out till I can see you again." He said "Listen Cowboy. You know I'd do anything to see you. Just give me a few days and I'll finish school." I said "Alright." He said "Ive gotta go. Charlie's mad at me and he's bound to come home soon." I said "Bye Darlin. I love you." He said "Bye cowboy. I love you too." I said and hung the phone up. I walked back into my room and closed my suit cases and pulled out my plane ticket. Dwayne's mom knew I was coming so she was going to pick me up. "Sam!" Charlie yelled "Yes?" I asked "Were gonna tell me your going to Texas for a month?" He asked angrily "Yes I was cause mom and you are taking me to the airport in the morning." I said "You can be serious." He said "What?" I asked "Sam. You two live on opposite sides of the country. How long do you think you are gonna last!?" He yelled "As long as we can." I said "He's gonna hurt you." Charlie said "Get out." I said and pushed him out of my room. That night I slept uneasy.

I woke up and put in shorts and a red t-shirt. Then I grabbed my stuff and went to the front door. Then hopped in the truck. Mom was the only person in the truck. "Where's Charlie?" I asked "He went to the skate shop already." Mom said and drove to the airport. My own brother didn't want to say goodbye. "Sammy we need to talk." Mom said. "Ok." I said and looked at her. "This came in the mail." She said and grabbed a big envelope package thingy. "What's this?" I asked "It's from a school. In Connecticut." She said and I opened it.
Loomis Chaffee School. It has a girls hockey team. I read the papers and everything. "They are giving me a scholarship for when I start high school in a few months." I said "that's amazing Sammy." Mom said. I put the papers in my bag and we finished our drive to the airport. I put my bags in check and mom left saying I had to call. All I could think about was when I was being scouted and I didn't even know. I wanted to tell Adam. But mostly Charlie. He didn't say goodbye and when I find out I was offered s scholarship he isn't even with me. My flight was called and I got on the plane.

I walked off my plane and it was cold in the airport. I saw a sign that had my name and I walked to the lady. "Are you Sam?" She asked "Yes." I said "Im Dwayne's mom. Cheyenne." She said. "How was your flight?" She asked "Good." I said. She helped me with my bags and we drove to Dwayne's house. "Dwayne's our workin but should be done in an hour." She said. She showed me to the guest bedroom and I unpacked. Soon I heard a door open and close. "Hey momma." Dwayne said "Hey sugar." She said "Have you talked to Sam?" She asked "No she's still in school." He said. I walked down the stairs and he was on the couch. "Dwayne!" Cheyenne said and he turned around and looked at me. "Sam?" He asked and jumped over the couch and ran to me. "Hey." I said and hugged him. "I thought you had school for the rest of the week." He said "Nope. I said that to make you stay here. Your mom wrote me and we talked and planned that I come here and surprise you. I got here about and hour and a half ago." I said "I can't believe your here." He said still hugging me.
We walked around outside hand in hand. He pulled me into a porch swing and sat while he laid his head in my lap. "Please tell me you didn't run away." He said "Dwayne I'm passed that. I've been ok for years. Well sorta." I said "what does that mean?" He asked "Charlie. When I told the team I was coming down here, and it was because they asked when the next time I was going to see you was. And Charlie got real mad. He didn't say goodbye to me before I left." I said leaving out the scholarship stuff. "Well I'm just happy you came here." He said.
That night I slept soundly.
I woke up and walked into Dwayne's room to find him sleeping on his back. I sat on the edge of his bed and put my hand on his face. "Dwayne." I whispered "Dwayne." I said a bit louder. He didn't move. I leaned down and kissed him and he opened his eyes. "I was awake the whole time. Just seeing how far you'd go." He said I slapped his chest and he laughed. "Let's go. I wanna take you somewhere." He said and I looked at my clothes. Sure I had brushed my teeth as soon as I got up but still. "Dwayne I'm lazy but I don't wanna go anywhere looking like this." I said and he walked to the guest room and grabbed some shorts. "Umm Dwayne where is a shirt?" I asked and he walked to his closet and pulled out a orange Crockett shirt. "Here." He said and walked in the hall. I changed and his shirt was past my shorts. I slipped on my converse and pulled my hair down. "Ok." I said and we left. His mom drove us to a store. "Thanks mom." He said and we got out. "Where are we?" I asked "Your gonna be here for how long?" He asked "About a month." I said "Well then you need shoes that will match mine." He said and pulled me in the store. It was filled with jeans and shirts and hats. He pulled me into a spot with boots. I instantly fell in love with them. I walked over to a brown pair. "I love these." I said. "Well try them on." He said and I did. They fit. "They fit." I said and he put them back in the box and carried them to the counter. "What can we do for you today Dwayne?" A man asked "Buyin my girlfriend here her first pair of boots. She ain't from here. She lives in Minnesota." Dwayne said "Well nice to meet you. And that's gonna be on the house Dwayne. Need to tech this one here what Texas is about." The man said and we Thanks him and walked outside. "Put them on." Dwayne said and I looked at him weird. Then I took my shoes off and put the boots on. Dwayne just stared. "What?" I asked "You look amazing." He said "Why? I'm wearing pretty much what I always do." I said "One your in my shirt and two your in boots." He said and wrapped his arms around me. "So what's on the list for today cowboy?" I asked "I'm thinking we can hang at my house. Catch up." He said. I needed to tell him about the scholarship. We went back to his house and I walked into my room. When was I going to tell him? How would I tell him? "Darlin all alright?"  Dwayne asked "Can you sit down please." I said and he sat on my bed "Sam what's goin on your scaring me." He said. I reached into my backpack and pulled out the papers from Loomis Chaffee. "This came in the mail for me yesterday." I said and handed him the papers. "Sam that's awesome." He said "No it's not." I said "I had scouts watching me. What if they were watching the whole team and picked for me to go somewhere else." I said "Sammy. Darlin. Baby chill." He said. I looked him in the eyes and kissed him.
