Max,

As I walked into the hospital I was feeling light-headed. What if the nurse won't let me see Shelby since I'm not family. Ross. I need to call Ross, he doesn't even know. I should've called him before I even got here, god I'm so stupid! As I called Ross I was pacing back and forth across the waiting room. Ross had said he was on his way.

He's going to hate me, this is all my fault. I shouldn't have let her run away from me. She wouldn't even be in here if it wasn't for me. I should be the one in the hospital bed, not Shelby.

When Ross had finally arrived he signed in as Shelby's brother. As the nurse led us back to Shelby's room I started to panic, what if she didn't want to see me. What if she started screaming at me, I still haven't told Ross what happened. He said it didn't matter as long as we were okay, but I felt like I would be betraying both of them if I didn't tell Ross.

Before I had the chance to pull Ross to the side we arrived at Shelby's room. Before we could go in the room the doctor walked out and closed the door behind him so we couldn't see in.

"Are you her brother's?"

"He's her boyfriend, and I'm the... brother," Ross answered as I looked down.

"Mm, okay. Before you go in I have some... bad news," we nodded.

"I'm sorry to say, but...," he looked at us, "Shelby's in a coma."

Ross and I stood there, looking helpless like we did when we were kids not able to reach the cookie jar or tie our shoes. I trained my eyes on the doctor's name tag as Ross spoke up.

"What can we do, is there anything that can help?" Ross choked out.

"Talk to her, act like she's awake. Some people believe when someone is in a coma they can actually hear whats going on around them and that it helps draw them back quicker. As for her injuries, there was nothing severe, just minor cuts, bruises, and a few fractured bones. They should all heal with time. If you would like to you can go in now." I nodded and Ross smiled.
