A Bloody Melody
Chapter Eleven
It was silent for a moment and all I could here was the sound of the night. The birds chirping, small animals hopping around, the sound of the guard’s boots as he passed on the other side of the fence and the wind as it found its way through the trees. This part of the jungle looked different than the part I had been in. It was more open, trees weren’t as close together and they were much taller. I remember seeing some of them over the fence.
I jumped as Ashley put her hand on my shoulder. She pointed to a camera that was placed in one of the trees and said, “Be careful were you step, Lainey. That one’s down but there are others. Go only where I go, okay?”
I gave her a nod and we started to walk. We didn’t move for too long and soon she stopped at a tree with a strange symbol carved into it. It was almost like a circle with another longer one going through it in the middle, except the end ended in a point. I traced it with my hand while Ashley whistled three times. I almost felt like I had seen it somewhere before but I couldn’t remember. It was just at the edge of my mind when a ladder fell from the tree and I had to jump out of the way.
I looked up in to the trees and saw that there was decking going from tree to tree making a large platform. I turned to Ashley in wonder and she gave me a playful nudge. “Told you we’d be safe.”
I shook my head and smiled. Now I understood what she meant by ‘We’ll be in the trees.’ She started to climb and about half way up she looked down and said, “Come on Lainey, you don’t want to be left behind.”
I gripped my hand on the wood and put my foot on the first rung. It was wobbling from Ashley and I had to get a good hold before I start to climb the rest of the way. It was hard and I kept thinking I was about to fall but I made it to the top. There was an open hatch at the top and a hand came down to help me through it. I held on as they pulled me up. I stumbled a bit and looked up to thank the person that had helped me but faltered. The smiled I had on my face was wiped clean and I looked towards Ashley. “What’s going on here?”
“This is the rebellion.” She opened her arms and I took another look to make sure that I wasn’t dreaming. This could very well be a dream. I could have just fallen asleep without realising it because this could not be real.
It was full of people that I knew; Tate, Calum, Whitney, Hannah, Oliver, Jenna, and most surprisingly, Lilith and Mitchell. They weren’t sneaking out to mess around with their friends. They were sneaking out to meet with a rebellion. The question was, about what? There were other people to, but none that I recognised.
“A rebellion for what? Why do you need a rebellion? There’s nothing to rebel against.” I backed away from all of them until I was pressed up to the wall of the large tree house.
Most of them were sat on old couches with throws over them, drinking from a mug. The lighting came from lamps and the atmosphere had obviously been friendly before I came in. A draft swirled through the cracks and brushed against my arms and I shivered. It was a cold night, one that was undoubtedly going to get colder.
I had come here thinking that this was just a group of people who sat around and complained about how they didn’t like some of the rules here. Judging from the whiteboard with blueprints of a wing of the science division they were a tad more serious than that. I only wanted some answers. I didn’t want to destroy a perfectly good community.
I may complain, but Deacon is a good place. It may have a lot of security, the people may judge you at first and the jungle may be dangerous but it’s a million times better than living your life in tunnels. You don’t have to eat porridge for every meal, you can go outside, boys and girls aren’t separated and no one is homeless. Everyone gets what they need here. It has parks and shops; I even passed a restaurant and saw that they served coffee. Coffee barely exists on Earth anymore. Why would they want to rebel that?
