A Bloody Melody
Chapter Fifteen
A sense of de ja vu washed over me as I stood in my small bathroom, staring into the mirror. I didn’t flinch this time as I looked at my body, to the scars that marred it. My hand traced across my belly, there weren’t a lot of them, only five or so. The cold had turned them red, making me look white. I tried to imagine what it was like, did I beg for my life while Collin carved out my skin? If was him.
Who was I kidding? He basically admitted it.
I let my eyes wander away from the mirror and put on my warm pyjamas. I wasn’t looking forward to what was coming. The questions; why didn’t you listen to us, Lainey? Why didn’t you just run away with Whitney, Lainey? Why didn’t you do this? Why didn’t you do that? What could I tell them? I slipped on some glass? Right, that was clever.
There was a knock on the door before Tate said, “Lainey, can I come in?”
“It’s open,” I told him.
He stepped in the crapped bathroom, before closing the door behind him.
“Are they mad?” I asked him.
“No,” he sighed. “They’re just worried. I’m worried. Lainey, you could have died today.”
“You think I don’t know that?”
“No, I know you do but…what were you even doing out there? I told you… I told you to stay inside.”
I paused, some of my anger fading at his defeated face. “I know. I’m sorry. I just wanted to help. Whitney said-”
“Damn it, Lainey. It didn’t matter what Whitney said. You should’ve stayed inside.” He slammed his fist done on the shelf next to the shower and my toiletries fell to the floor. I jumped back in shock and pressed my back into the sink.
“Sorry, I’m sorry.” He stepped towards me and gripped my arms tightly. “But you have to promise me, Lainey, promise me you will never do anything like that again.”
I nodded fast. “I promise.”
“You swear, Lainey. Next time you might not be so lucky. Next time you might die.”
“There won’t be a next time.”
He groaned. “Lainey…”
“Okay, I get it. I do. I’m sorry I shouldn’t have gone outside, I just wanted to help. I won’t go anywhere without you or Calum from now on. I promise.” I gave him a small tentative smile.
“Fine, because if you do, do this again you’ll be reassigned.”
“What do you mean?”
“You’ll get new guards.”
“But… they can’t do that.”
“Yes, they can. It’s pretty obvious that someone out there is trying to finish what they started and if Calum and I can’t protect you then they’ll have to find someone else to do the job.”
That’s ridiculous. I’ve only just begun to feel comfortable around both of them. If I got new guards, would I even be able to trust them? I shook my head. I’ll just have to behave. No more being reckless. No more sneaking out.
“I’ll behave.”
He smiled. “Come on then, the others are waiting for you.”
I followed him into the living room. Lilith, Jenna and an old man had joined everyone one else. They stood up as soon as we came through the door. Lilith rushed over to me, her face a mask of worry. “Are you alright? What happened, we heard a bang?”
