A Bloody Melody
Chapter Twenty Two
It was silent for a moment as everyone tried to comprehend what Ashley had just told us. Because I must have misheard, right? What she said couldn’t be true. Collin has Jenna. What did that mean? Had he abducted her? Collin would never take Jenna, why would he? My stomach began to churn and I felt like I was going to be sick. What if he did to her what he did to me?
No. We had to do something. The silence was broke as a cry of outrage flew through the group. Someone fell of the crate they had been sitting on in surprise. Unable to stand up anymore I let the wall support me as I slid to the ground. I pressed my hands to my knees to try and stop the shaking.
“How? Why? Why would he do that?” a woman I had seen training with Ashley and Jenna in the courtyard asked. Her eyes were tearing up and her hands had started to shake.
Ashley looked away from her, her hand had scrunched into fist and she bit her lip before speaking, “She…he…,” she stopped and cleared her throat, “he had contacted her. He knew what we were doing. He knows what we’re doing. He wanted her to bring all the information we had on him. He knew everything. She told me. She didn’t know what to do. He was threatening to go to Ben, to tell him all about us. She had until yesterday to hand everything over… she didn’t. I don’t know how but he did this… and he took her.”
“But how could he just take her? Someone must have seen?” I didn’t know who asked. I wasn’t looking at them anymore. I had closed my eyes, taking deep breaths, trying to take it all in.
“They did. I did. It- it was in all the chaos. I tried to get to her but it was too late.” The devastation in her voice was heart breaking. I couldn’t imagine what she was going though, to have your girlfriend abducted. To see it happen and be helpless. It must be one of the worst feelings in the world, that helplessness. It reminded me of my conversation with Tate this morning. He had felt that with his sister. With me.
Someone asked the obvious question, “Well, what does he want? He has to want something.”
Ashley had already told us what he wants but I guess no one really listened. With the shock and all. “He radioed me. He wants to paperwork. The files we have on him.”
“When?”
“We have until midnight to get everything or he’ll kill her… he’ll kill her.” Her voice broke and I could hear the tears. I didn’t need to see them. Someone comforted her and she started to cry even harder. To deal with all this and then have to figure out what had happen with Tate and me, all while keeping it together. Ashley really was something amazing. It was only right that she got to let go, even if it was only for a couple of minutes.
The words she had just said bounced around in my mind. He’ll kill her. It wounded its way around my head and echoed over and over again. He would kill Jenna, she would be dead. She would be dead because of this fixation with Ben. I understood that Collin was bad. He was terrible. He was horrible. He was a monster and he deserved to die. We needed to do something. We need to help Jenna.
“I don’t understand. Why didn’t you tell us sooner? We could’ve helped her, sorted this mess out?” The man that was arguing with Tate in the tree house a few days ago asked. His voice wasn’t as soft as the others.
Ashley snivelled and said, “She didn’t want anyone to know. She thought that she could handle it.”
He scoffed. “Well obviously she couldn’t.”
The sound of skin hitting skin filled the room and I just knew that she had slapped him. It wasn’t like he didn’t deserve it. He would never know what he would’ve done in that situation until he was in it. “Don’t you dare blame her,” Ashley shouted. “She tried to protect you, every single one of you and she’s going to die because of that.”
