A Bloody Melody

Chapter Thirteen

My back hit the mat again with a hard thud. I stared unforgivingly at the gray ceiling as I lay there. I was being punished, I was sure of it. Someone nudged my foot and letting out a loud groan I rolled over. I didn't know why I thought that these lessons might be a good idea. All I'd done so far was get my arse kicked and repeatedly be thrown back onto the mat. I spread my arms out and didn't bother trying to get back up.

"Get up, Lainey," Olivia, the girl who was training me with Tate, shouted. I could hear the annoyance in her voice. I don't think she liked me very much. She'd done nothing but look down on me since I arrived this morning.

"Do I have to? I've already been pummelled enough today, don't you think?" I whined.

She grabbed my hand roughly and pulled me up. I looked in to her fiery eyes as she said, "No, what happens if someone attacks you. Do you think they're going to give you a break every five minutes? Maybe they'll let you lie down, get your energy back."

I pulled my hand out of her grip. "You don't have to be so condescending."

"Well no one else here is going to teach you," she said it while giving Tate a glare. He'd come to pick me up that morning and had done nothing but watch Olivia try to teach me how to defend myself. He let out a few laughs every now and then but other than that he hadn't said anything.

He pointed to himself and said in an innocent tone, "You talking to me? Sorry, love, I'm just here to watch. When she's got the basics, now that's when I come in."

Olivia just huffed and took a fighting stance. I prepared myself for another beating. I wasn't much of a fighter. When I'm in real danger maybe the soldier in me might come out but with her, I knew she wasn’t going to do any lasting damage. So far all she'd done was pin me down and show me how easy it would be to detain me.

This time she wasn't going easy on me. She took the first shot, her hand shooting out to lock around my neck. Again, I tried to get out of the way but I had no idea what to do or where to go. We’d gone through the moves earlier but they just flew straight over my head. My back hit the mat again. I felt a sharp pain shoot out of my shoulder and had to bite my lip to stop from screaming out. I still wasn't fully healed. I hadn't even start physical therapy yet.

Tears built in my eyes and I tried really hard not to say every nasty word I had ever learned to Olivia. She was about to pull me back to my feet but I shook my head and told her, "My back."

"What about your bloody back?" She wasn't having any of it. He voice had turned into more of a growl.

I looked over to Tate; he had stood up and was walking over. I asked her, "You were told to be careful with it weren't you? I still haven't had my stitches out."

"What are you talking about? Here let me look." She made a move to lift up my top but I scooted back.

"What's going on?" Tate asked.

Olivia shrugged. "Something to do with her back, she won't let me take a look."

"Shit,” Tate swore. “I'm sorry, Lainey, I forgot. Let me take a look." He moved towards me but I scooted back again. If I didn't want a girl to look at my back then I certainly didn't want a boy to. I may be more comfortable around him but I wasn't that comfortable.

"It's either him or me?" Olivia said. I could tell she was still annoyed by me, but maybe less now. She even seemed slightly concerned. She ruined whatever nice thought was coming next when she said, "Hurry up, kid. I don't have all day."
